What Do You Meme? Using Memes for Marketing

If you’ve been surfing the web at all over the past few years, you’ve probably noticed an abundance of what internet users refer to as “memes.” While the internet generation would love to claim the creation of this social media icon, the word in its current meaning has been around since the mid-1970s and memes themselves have been around since practically the dawn of man. A meme, by definition, is “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.” Recently, memes have been appearing as repeated images or actions shared through social media. For example, by sharing pictures of friends “planking” (lying down completely flat) in unusual places, or by adding funny tag lines to odd pictures, like those found on the website ICanHasCheezburger.com. A meme that has received a lot of attention recently is the Ridiculously Photogenic Guy. Snapped during the 2012 Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, South Carolina, the photo began receiving a high number of hits within hours of being posted.
