If MMOs didn’t have the internet, well, they wouldn’t run at all. But they’d also be devoid of a precious resource, which is external repositories of game knowledge. Our titles are complex and sprawling, and the field of wikis, guides, and forums have been essential to navigating them from the very onset of the modern genre. That said, how often are you tabbing out of your MMOs for help (or to you technologically rich, using a second or third screen)? I will often be taking quick breaks from the game to look up answers to how to complete quests, where certain NPCs are located, or how to figure out some obtuse system. I mean, obviously in a better world with proper in-game documentation we wouldn’t have to do this, but that’s not the world we inhabit. Do you tab out for help much? If so, how often? Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
