The latest World of Warcraft expansion has been out since August 14th and while it has garnered decent praise for its story and excellent level design, Battle for Azeroth has simultaneously been plagued by more than a few major technical issues, not to mention a -legion- of smaller woes. After the stellar launch of Legion and other past expansions, players are left wondering if Battle for Azeroth was taken out of the oven just a bit too early. advertisement Now let's be clear here: The purpose of the article is not to review Battle for Azeroth or to take on its story, level design or features. What is at issue are the number of technical problems that the expansion faces. The simple premise is that Battle for Azeroth is not up to the standards we've come to expect from a Blizzard product. Before launching into some of the bigger issues that players are faced with in BfA, it is worth noting that far too many of the things players have discovered have been present … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft: Beta for Azeroth

The conflict between the Horde and Alliance has been brewing for a long time now, and with the release of this content we see the story of our beloved factions hit an all-time high. As always, the World of Warcraft art team wanted to ensure that the visuals we created for this expansion matched the epic storytelling that went into crafting this experience. This game is the product of a whole team of insanely talented craftspeople and we’re … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft Art Teams to Showcase Their Work All Week at ArtStation
Full disclosure: Battle for Azeroth code provided by Blizzard.Man, I’ve done a lot in the past week in World of Warcraft. But before I dive in, a quick friendly reminder. I occasionally stream my adventures. So follow me on Twitter (@ShankTheTank) for updates when I go live on my Twitch, Mixer, YouTube, and Periscope. For a playlist of my adventures so far, check out this playlist. advertisement Alright with that out of the way, I can honestly say that the more I play this game, the more I begin to appreciate why World of Warcraft has been a mainstay for 14 years. Every time I play it now, I’m just furiously kicking myself for not playing this earlier. I can only imagine how epic it must be to have been a Day 1 player and journeyed with the game for these last 14 years. To see the story unfold and mechanics evolve must be fascinating.I’ve done quite a lot in the past week. Starting off my adventures, I initially went north to Stormsong Valley. But not … [Read more...] about A Newb’s Adventures In World of Warcraft
The World of Warcraft site has been updated with a pair of newsy news items. In the first, devs detail a number of changes coming to the item listing process on the WoW Auction House. In the second, an exploit that allowed players to "farm" quests repeatedly to gain Exalted reputations has been identified and hotfixed. Players who took advantage of the exploit will be punished, though no word has come down yet on what that punishment will be. Since the launch of Battle for Azeroth, players have complained about how laggy the interface has been as it culls through available items for sale. Much of this has been caused by thousands of listings of single items, particularly trade goods. "One thing we've identified as particularly troublesome is a large volume of trade skill materials being auctioned off in stacks of 1." the post reads. At issue is the fact that the listing price is currently very low per item listed. That will, however, be changing. The price to list items … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft Auction House Changes & Reputation Exploit Closed
Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the Battle for Azeroth expansion to World of Warcraft has scored a new Day-One sales record by moving 3.4M copies on August 14th. Seemingly, this does not include units pre-ordered prior to launch day. This makes BfA the "fastest-selling WoW expansion ever" and makes it "one of the fastest-selling PC games of all time". “Battle for Azeroth is a definitive chapter in the Horde and Alliance conflict at the heart of Warcraft, and it’s been thrilling to see players representing their factions in record numbers and embarking on their war campaigns—not to mention joining in ourselves,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “But the launch is just the beginning of this conflict. More epic content is coming to World of Warcraft in the weeks ahead, and we can’t wait for players to experience the full story as it unfolds over the course of the expansion.” In the coming … [Read more...] about Battle for Azeroth Scores 3.4M Copies Sold for a New Day-One Sales Record
If you were looking forward to taking part in Warfronts when World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth launches, you may want to temper that hope. According to one of Blizzard's community managers, Warfronts will not be part of the launch experience. The game's first warfront, Battle for Stromgarde, will arrive in September. Ythisens wrote: "Similar to other types of endgame content such as raids and rated PvP, the Battle for Stromgarde will not be immediately available at launch. Instead, it’ll open a few weeks later." According to WoWHead: Inspired by the real-time strategy (RTS) origins of Warcraft III, Warfronts are a PvE activity that allows you to play the role of a lieutenant leading the charge on the group for a massive battle. With a full group of 20 allied players, you're responsible for creating outposts, securing resources, set-up supply lines, and train troops to push the assault forward and conquer the enemy stronghold. However, unlike in Warcraft III, you won't be … [Read more...] about Warfronts Will Arrive a Few Weeks After the Launch of Battle for Azeroth
A pair of interesting interviews about World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth have cropped up, one with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas and John Hight about the drama and issues around the expansion pre-event. The other is with former Blizzard developer Chris Metzen on the issue of nerd toxicity. On the issue of the controversy surrounding the Burning of Teldrassil and the community reaction: I noticed is how many people felt like the Burning of Teldrassil was supposed to be this big mystery. People expected a twist and felt like Blizzard set it up that way. Going back and watching some older developer Q&As, though, I couldn't find much evidence of that. What happened there, from your perspective? Hazzikostaks: On the internet, as this giant game of telephone to some extent, things can definitely take on a life of their own. At Blizzcon 2017, I remember Alex Afrasiabi teed up the question of who struck first: The Burning of [Teldrassil] or the assault on Lordaeron? But that was … [Read more...] about WoW’s Game Director On BfA’s Pre-Event; Metzen on Toxic Nerd Culture
In an interview at ScienceAlert.com, Creative Director Alex Afrasiabi answered several interesting questions about storytelling in World of Warcraft. The interview was conducted prior to the start of the Battle for Azeroth pre-expansion event, War of Thorns, that has, to put it mildly, kicked up a lot of emotions with players. In one forward looking statement, Afrasiabi clearly indicates that the team knew that emotions would be running high, but urges patience with the unfolding of the story. As the story of Battle For Azeroth begins, what would you like to say to players about what they should expect in the story that's starting to unfold? Afrasiabi: What I would say is… Be patient. This is a living, breathing world and a living, breathing story that is continuing to progress. A game, especially WoW, it isn't like a book where you can just devour it and get the satisfaction of learning and understanding the whole of it, right? Unfortunately for us, we have chapters broken … [Read more...] about Alex Afrasiabi on Story

In a pair of Twitter posts, Blizzard developers have informed World of Warcraft PvP players that all current Legion Prestige Levels will be rolled into a single cumulative total in Battle for Azeroth. Prestige Levels are currently earned through participation in PvP activities in Legion. For example, if a player has five characters at Prestige Level 2, in BfA, the player's account will be Prestige Level 10. This provides a number of benefits including mounts, pets & toys. In Battle for Azeroth, all of your Prestige levels are going to merge. So if you have three characters who reached Prestige 4 in Legion, your account will be set to Prestige 12 in Battle for Azeroth. https://t.co/IPPxkvjQL3 — WarcraftDevs (@WarcraftDevs) May 2, 2018 In addition, any gear appearances unlocked by a player will become available account-wide. Blizzard has rolled out a new World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth build that is paving the way for the future addition of War Mode, the open world "toggle-able" PvP experience coming with the expansion. Game designer 'Phalanx' has posted some brief facts about four different aspects of War Mode, including the brand new Bounty Hunting feature. During War Mode, players will have Honor Talents enabled as they do when entering instanced PvP. Once War Mode is toggled by a player in a capital city, Honor Talents become active and remain so for the entire time the player is flagged for PvP. During PvP combat, gear will be scaled to a roughly equivalent level between combatants. If a player's gear is better than the opponent, they will still have a slight advantage, but a reasonable one. Players will earn Conquest during World PvP, a nice addition to the pool of activities where Conquest can be earned. The more opponents a player kills during War Mode, the more likely they … [Read more...] about New War Mode Details Revealed
The World of Warcraft community site has been updated with a new article to provide readers with a brief look at two of the 'Allied Races' coming with the Battle for Azeroth expansion. Both the Mag'har Orcs (Horde) and Dark Iron Dwarves (Alliance) are provided with contextual lore connecting them to each faction as well as a look at what classes each can be and what their racial traits are. For untold generations, the orc clans of Draenor battled one another in endless war. But when Gul'dan offered them the blood of his demonic masters, the disparate tribes of Mag'har—the orcish word for "uncorrupted"—refused the dark bargain and banded together to drive out the Burning Legion. United under the leadership of Grommash Hellscream, the Mag'har pledged to one day repay Azeroth's heroes for aiding their cause. As war against the Alliance intensifies, the Horde must call upon the might of the Mag'har to seize victory. Check it out on the World of Warcraft community site. … [Read more...] about Blizzard Previews Dark Iron Dwarves & Mag’har Orcs
Why bother looking for a game that brings back fond memories of more "hardcore" MMO days when you know that Ultima Online, the game that many feel is the standard for what today's MMOs should be, is going free to play? Broadsword has announced that Publish 99 will bring the F2P "Endless Journey" to Ultima Online, though there are some restrictions in place. Rest assured that there is still a subscription option available with no restrictions. Preliminary Endless Journey restrictions have been added to TC1. World of Warcraft will be growing soon with the Battle for Azeroth expansion. The story’s premise marks a return to the faction war after the defeat of the Burning Legion. Horde and Alliance worked cooperatively to bring down Sargeras and his forces in Legion. However, peace is a fragile thing and tensions are mounting between the two for many reasons. After Sargera’s massive sword plunged into the heart of Azeroth itself, each side is rushing to discover what the mysterious substance is bubbling out of the ground and how it can be best put to use…or to be kept out of the hands of their opponent. advertisement Horde and Alliance, at least in theory, will be making tough choices. These may, Ion Hazzikostas said in a recent Q&A, seem morally gray, but will, in the end, be for the greater good. “Evil is a matter of perspective,” Hazzikostas said in April. “Warcraft is supposed to involve shades of gray.”It … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft
