Perhaps in the future, we’ll all be looking back at the time when e-sports were an actual thing played by humans rather than simply a competition between teams of AI. As the Dota 2 world championships take place this year, spectators will have one team to cheer for that’s definitely not on drugs and has never been suspended for inappropriate behavior, because the team consists of AI players working in harmony. Elon Musk’s OpenAI team is heading to the championships, and it’s not just doing so as a novelty; the team has already won its way in against a team of semipro players. Of course, it’s an open question whether or not the AI players can match up against the best players in the world, but thus far results are encouraging, and even a hard-fought loss would indicate that the AI in question is approaching the upper limit of what humans are capable of. So keep your eyes peeled, as we may be looking at a line of competition that’s ending remarkably … [Read more...] about One of the competitors in Dota 2’s championship is an AI team
Though the realization of transplanted artificial intelligence is still a ways away, MindArk is preparing for the use of advanced AI data to create virtual avatars based on the consciousness of real people. The virtual world may just be the key to life after death, according to MindArk, the Swedish-based game developer. Entropia Universe may become a potential reality where human consciousness can be inserted into virtual characters, making it possible to continue to live on as an Avatar well after their human body has passed away. MindArk is closely following the work of scientists in the “Mind Uploading” field, which includes research from Princeton University, Oxford University, and other institutions. The company is already testing new technology to create more realistic gaming experiences and is establishing itself as a leader in the virtual space where digital consciousness can be paired with artificial intelligence. This will open new possibilities for … [Read more...] about MindArk Cultivating Online Immortality in Entropia Universe Through Advanced AI Research
In a new interview, Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan has revealed that the company is looking for ways to implement AI to track and punish toxic Overwatch players, an issue that Kaplan and his team feel strongly about. So important, in fact, that content creation has been scaled back somewhat to give devs more time to adequately address the issue. Using AI may be just the ticket. "We've been experimenting with machine learning. We've been trying to teach our games what toxic language is, which is kinda fun. The thinking there is you don't have to wait for a report to determine that something's toxic. Our goal is to get it so you don't have to wait for a report to happen." The overall goal is, of course, to catch toxic behavior before it is even reported and to eventually eliminate, or see a great reduction in, the player reporting system which has its drawbacks with speed of reporting, punishment meted out and in the potential abuse by some players. Blizzard will start by 'teaching' its machines … [Read more...] about Blizzard Exploring How AI Can Target & Punish Toxic Players

This week’s Star Citizen Around the Verse is only indirectly about Star Citizen. The episode instead centers on Squadron 42, which is either a separate game or the same game depending on which side of the lawsuit you fall on, but either way, updates for one are crossover updates for the other too. The S42 team says that lately it’s working on details for ships that are so big they basically have their own completely functional massive subway systems to help you get around them, something I can honestly say I’ve never seen in an MMO before, so that’ll be fun to see in the bigger game. ‘Course, if it takes that long to travel between areas on the ship subway, your character’s going to need a loaded mobiGlas device with some minigames to pass the time. Gems, anyone? The larger section of the episode focuses on flight AI. “This is a single-player affair,” CIG’s Sean Tracy says of S42 specifically, “so a lot of the heavy-lifting … [Read more...] about Star Citizen’s Around the Verse updates players on Squadron 42 and flight AI
