Arriving on December 13, Atlas combines EVE Online and ARK for something altogether different. Studio Wildcard, the creator of survival game poster child ARK: Survival Evolved, is making a pirate-themed sandbox MMO where you can capture and govern entire islands, build and sail galleons, and then fight in massive sea battles against other players. It’s EVE Online mashed with ARK, and it’s releasing on Steam Early Access on December 13 for $30. At a time in gaming where several say a game has to have multiplayer to succeed, Obsidian steps in to show off their latest foray into the single player RPG experience with their newest game The Outer Worlds with the help of Private Division. A new title that is part of a new IP for them aims to prove that they are still one of the best companies around in this aspect of gaming. I had an opportunity to visit Obsidian’s headquarters recently and get a look at the game and what it’s all about. If you blinked during the Game Awards on Twitch, you might have missed the announcement of a new MMO launching next week from the makers of ARK: Survival Evolved. Studio WildCard’s Jeremy Stieglitz and Jesse Rapczak were on hand with a quick trailer and interview to herald the upcoming release of Atlas — a massive pirate-filled world — that hits PCs December 13th and is credited to Grapeshot Games and Instinct Games. And by release, they mean “two years of early access,” apparently, but this is WildCard, so you probably figured that. This first person MMO – an “MMO On the Grandest Scale,” the Steam page boldly declares – will then launch on XboxOne next year in the game preview program. Pete mentioned something about it on Twitter. I am not really a follower of awards shows in general because traditionally speaking they don’t actually reflect my interests in quite literally anything. The academy awards tend to focus on artsy films, and the grammys tend to focus on pop music… neither of which are really my jam. I still remember the Grammys where Metallica Performed and was nominated for the new “Hard Rock” category… against Jethro Tull… and Jethro Tull won. Basically I have always sorta considered the awards scene to be grossly out of touch with anything that interested me. I can’t really say that the Game Awards are all that different given that I don’t really play a lot of the games that they talked about. It has been however super interesting to watch the show evolve over time. Each year the “realness” has escalated significantly and last night… it … [Read more...] about Shotguns and Game Awards
