I finally bought a PS4 Pro last Friday – Black Friday – along with a few games, including 2 MMOs: Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy 14. It took a while to install (downloads on the console seem throttled) so I let both complete overnight after putting the console into “rest mode”. I started up ESO first, but it requires a PS+ membership. Those are $60 a year, currently on sale for $40 a year, but FF14 doesn’t have the same requirement. So I switched over to FF14 instead. I’ll get to ESO later. Rather than use my old account, I started a new one. Establishing an account was awful on console – doing all the “enter name, password” fields using the controller made me want to get a small keyboard to use. But I made it through and created a Lalafell character because I like short/tiny races. After a bit of fumbling around I figured out how to take screenshots and transfer them over to my PC using a USB stick. I also started on a … [Read more...] about FF14 – Console Learning Curve
PC gaming does it all. PlayStation is the ultimate gaming device. Switch to a Switch anytime, anywhere. XBOX is more than just games. Since the dawn of time that mattered (i.e. when we could play video games at home), wars have raged to determine the best gaming device. Whether it was Atari or NES, Genesis or SNES, or the more recent war between the three current-gen consoles and PC, we love to debate the best gaming device. How does this debate play out in the MMO space though? Well, clearly PC is better. The selection of games absolutely dwarfs the console selection. So my question for this article isn’t simply which one is better now. It’s which one has most potential for an MMO gaming device. Case for PC MMORPGs first started on the PC with the advent of text based MUDs. Keyboard input was critical for these games because they lacked any sort of graphical interface. Keyboards still provide an immense advantage – for one thing it expands communication. What are we … [Read more...] about Console vs. PC: Best MMO Gaming Device
About 5 months ago, I made the decision to preorder a PlayStation 4. Some of you might see that as a bold or brave choice, while others might think that it’s ridiculous or short-sighted. A few might even wonder why, as a heavy-PC gamer with a powerful gaming rig, I’m getting a console at all. The truth is, I’ve been eyeing up the next generation of consoles for some time now. The graphical grunt and online capabilities of each machine feel like they’re getting good enough to deliver some incredibly rich experiences. Take one look at titles like Titanfall, Destiny, The Division and Dying Light, and it’s clear that the concept of multiplayer gaming is changing. With flexible grouping systems and an open-world feel, they’re beginning to borrow from the MMO playbook. Selecting a system has been a slightly trickier issue, as I’ve based my decision on the current-generation crop. Nintendo’s Wii had some great games, but failed to live up to my … [Read more...] about PlayStation 4: A Console for MMO Gamers?
Play Elder Scrolls OnlineMaybe you saw it coming, maybe not, but it’s official now as it’s just been announced on the stream: The Elder Scrolls Online’s next expansion/chapter is Summerset, home of the high elves, the first time the franchise has been back to that area since Arena in 1994. Mark June 5th in your calendars, as it’ll release then on all platforms – yes, PC and console simultaneous release. [This appears to have been an error in the press release; the website lists May 21st for PC and June 5th for console.] We’re getting not just Summerset Isle but a new storyline, a new faction, a new skill line, a new crafting skill, and multiple new group dungeons. “By the decree of Queen Ayrenn, Summerset Isle is now open to foreigners, but a Daedric threat looms over the breathtaking home of the High Elves. Players will travel to the Summerset Isle, gather allies, and unravel a shadowy conspiracy that threatens all of Tamriel. ESO: Summerset … [Read more...] about The Elder Scrolls Online announces Summerset chapter for May 21 for PC and June 5 for console
