The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) held its annual video game awards show last night, despite not mentioning “video games” in its name. Maybe it should be renamed BAFTVGA. The event, which took place at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, was mostly dominated by God of War, which won five awards, but a couple of free-to-play games also walked away with some hardware. Notably, Fortnite: Battle Royale won the prize for Best Evolving Game, and Old School RuneScape was a winner in the EE Mobile Game of the Year category. That second award was voted on by fans, of which RuneScape has more than a few. Even so, it beat out some pretty hardcore competition, including Fortnite, Pokémon Go, Clash Royale, Roblox, and Brawl Stars. Jagex CEO Phil Mansell called the victory “astounding recognition by our players” while calling out the six and a half million players who have downloaded the game since its launch in September. Pete mentioned something about it on Twitter. I am not really a follower of awards shows in general because traditionally speaking they don’t actually reflect my interests in quite literally anything. The academy awards tend to focus on artsy films, and the grammys tend to focus on pop music… neither of which are really my jam. I still remember the Grammys where Metallica Performed and was nominated for the new “Hard Rock” category… against Jethro Tull… and Jethro Tull won. Basically I have always sorta considered the awards scene to be grossly out of touch with anything that interested me. I can’t really say that the Game Awards are all that different given that I don’t really play a lot of the games that they talked about. It has been however super interesting to watch the show evolve over time. Each year the “realness” has escalated significantly and last night… it … [Read more...] about Shotguns and Game Awards
The Game Awards 2018 is here, and going live in a few hours to celebrate the best games of 2018. Just like the year previously, this year’s line-up of GOTY contenders are solid and difficult to separate. Each offers something unique to players, and they do have some similarities, for instance, adventure and RPG. Sony has been teasing players for ages about a Spider-Man exclusive game for the PS4 and this year saw its release to the masses. It sold well, and continues to sell as it’s a household name, but it’s not a shallow game either, as previous superhero titles in the past from Marvel tend to be. Firstly, it’s massive game world and scope, depth and story are all plus points. … [Read more...] about Game Awards 2018: Who Should Win Game Of The Year 2018?

The first major Game of the Year event will be The Game Awards on December 7th, and yesterday, the full list of nominations was released. In the category of “Best Ongoing Game” (referring to titles that have been constantly updated and played), Overwatch found itself nominated. Though a step down in some ways (as the title won many literal Game of the Year awards after its debut last year), it’s still a very interesting category to be a part of, and it is well deserved. For the team at Blizzard have been hard at work implementing many new things into the game. Not the least of which is new characters, new worlds, new modes, and many, MANY, new balance patches and updates. Now, the fun thing about The Game Awards is that it is you the fan who gets to decide the winners, … [Read more...] about Overwatch Nominated For “Best Ongoing Game” For The Game Awards
Any publisher can make a game, a good publisher can make a good game, and a great publisher can make several great games. When the end of the year comes, sites and fans help determine what developers and publishers made the best games. The first of these is The Game Awards, which revealed yesterday nominees in a vast array of categories. And one of the top publishers to come out of these nominations was Ubisoft. For they had five games nominated across six categories. First up is the surprise hit of the year in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. This game got nominated for “Best Strategy Game” and “Best Family Game”. Not sure about that last one, did they not see the swearing robot?
