While I got in a fair bit of gaming this weekend… it was far from the major mission at hand. We had decided some weeks back that over spring break we would rehabilitate our lawn. We had been putting this off for some time as evidenced by the mountain of yard waste that is now sitting waiting for the city to pick it up. Our city has two options for lawn waste the first being get a red bin and then in essence pay rent on it all year round. The other option is to go to a local QuikTrip store and buy some very pricey special bags emblazoned with the city name on them that denote that the it is going to some sort of a yard waste recycling plant. Unfortunately I just looked up on the city website…. and it appears that yard waste collection will not resume until April 9th meaning these bags will be hanging out on the side of my house a little longer than I expected. It was a pretty weekend however and allowed us to get things under control … [Read more...] about Opening the Patio
Before we begin: MMO Fallout isn’t shutting down, I’m not going away, nobody else is taking over, I’m not selling the domain. I’m burying the lead with this note but I personally don’t like when other publications/people start with this headline and then make you read an entire article to find out if it is their farewell address. This isn’t my farewell address. One concept I’ve maintained over the years with MMO Fallout is complete transparency, I promised that if this website ever attained the kind of revenue that would allow me to peruse the dollar menu at McDonald’s that this website would for all intent and purpose (barring that in a legal capacity) become a completely transparent organization. I haven’t had to do this because, as I’ve said numerous times, MMO Fallout doesn’t generate revenue. I’ve briefly considered starting a Patreon a few times in the past, mostly after viewers suggested it, but I can … [Read more...] about Let’s Talk The Future of MMO Fallout
This is, bar none, the column I hate doing most on a regular basis. None of the games I highlight in here is something that I actually like pointing to; they’re games that people like, games that may very well be someone’s absolute favorites, and yet they’re also games where the future looks difficult if not outright bad. A cloudy future is never a good thing, and this particular column does not make it all right. But we’re still here in the early days of 2018, and that means it’s still the right time to look at the games we might not see around next year. For various reasons, these are the games that already look like they’re in trouble, instead of absolute face-shattering surprises like a couple of the shutdowns last year. 1. WildStar Another year, another prediction of doom? Not a happy one, of course, but one that still seems apropos. This is a game I really enjoy but that never got the traction it needed to make itself sustainable, and its … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: The MMOs with the most uncertain futures in 2018
Earlier this month, Overwatch made headlines when a player posted up a behavioral therapy chart his wife – who happens to be a therapist – made him fill out after he complained about his game losses. The idea is that you write down your “negative thoughts” about the game experience, then reflect on that to see how your temporary emotion has distorted your opinions, then craft a positive frame instead. It’s funny – but also pretty useful, and even Overwatch Redditors were asking for a blank sheet so they could try it themselves. That brings us to today’s Daily Grind: How do you deal with your anger in an MMO? Do you complain to guildies, log out, bang your desk, go work out to burn off some steam? Are you handling it as well as the Overwatch Redditor and trying to learn from what went wrong? What do you do, exactly, when your teammates turn out to be “hot garbage”? My wife told me to fill out this form after I kept complaining about … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: How do you deal with your anger in MMORPGs?
