New Blizzard President J. Allen Brack Doubles Down on Identity Politics

In all my years of covering Blizzard and World of Warcraft, I have never seen Blizzard fans so exasperated and disheartened than now. Gamers who emotionally invested themselves in their games over the years feel betrayed by Blizzard. Much like the bond Mac users have with Apple, there was always a sense of unwavering loyalty between Blizzard and their fans. The formerly unapologetic Blizzard created exceptional games to the beat of their own drum and timeline — and the fans rewarded them for it with undying devotion and adulation. Blizzard is in serious trouble. The overwhelmingly negative votes in a YouTube video for a new mount in World of Warcraft is an accurate barometer of the fans mood. Even the stock price of Activision/Blizzard has fallen by approximately 44% from its high in October 2018. The utter disgust that gamers have toward the new Blizzard and their tone-deaf avarice is staggering. One YouTube commenter has nailed the sentiment with a humorous parody of the … [Read more...] about New Blizzard President J. Allen Brack Doubles Down on Identity Politics

MMO Year in Review: Literally the biggest news day in MMO history (September 2018)

We’re taking a time-machine back through our MMO coverage, month by month, to hit the highlights and frame our journey before we head into 2019! You might think that August, having birthed Battle for Azeroth, would have been the bombshell month for 2018, but you’d be wrong. It was in fact September, which saw the announcement that EVE Online and CCP Games had been bought out by Black Desert’s Pearl Abyss, the news that THQ Nordic had bought the rights to and abandoned MMO Project Copernicus, the revelation that WildStar and Carbine were being shut down, and the report that Daybreak had seen major investment from a benefactor aiming to use it to build mobile games and an e-sports empire. And that was all just on September 6th! The rest of the month was no slouch either; we learned that another Lord of the Rings MMO is in the works, Boundless launched, Belgium began its criminal investigation over lockboxes, and MassivelyOP itself got a major website overhaul. … [Read more...] about MMO Year in Review: Literally the biggest news day in MMO history (September 2018)

The MOP Up: Conan Exiles pops its god bubbles

Bubbles. They are marvelous things that thrill children, turn gum into an art form, and apparently ward off evil barbarians from being naughty. Of course the danger of bubbles is that every so often… they pop. The so-called “god bubbles” have been failing at Conan Exiles, causing some corrective action to take place: “We’ve been aware of a critical issue affecting the functionality of Shrine protection, or ‘god bubbles,’ which would make them disappear on server restart under certain circumstances. Our team has been working hard on providing a fix for it.” And this is just the beginning of the rest of the news! Read on for a roundup of other smaller MMO news stories and videos from this past week in this edition of The MOP Up (and if you don’t see a news story that we should have covered, drop us a tip)! [With thanks to Steve for our intro tip here!] Good news for Overwatch fans: You’re finally getting … [Read more...] about The MOP Up: Conan Exiles pops its god bubbles

Massively Overthinking: Tackling the ‘big four MMOs’ meme

Over the last couple of months, there’s been a meme floating around the MMORPG subreddit. Someone will ask that the community recommend a game, and the responses will all look like “WoW/ESO/XIV/GW2” referring to the only four games that really matter according to the meme: World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV, and Guild Wars 2. I get why the sub would resort to this, given how many “what game should I play” threads they see every week. But I wonder if it doesn’t do the genre an injustice, since obviously there are far more games out there, and successful ones, at that. So for this week’s Overthinking, I’ve asked our staff to reflect on the “big four” meme. Do you agree those are the biggest MMOs, or the four MMOs most worthy of consideration, anyway, and which other MMOs should be on the list? Andy McAdams: The four games listed are the “safest” choices of the MMO world – they … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Tackling the ‘big four MMOs’ meme
