According to research site Sensor Tower (via VG247) Niantic's Pokemon Go has generated nearly two BILLION dollars in revenue since launching in July 2016. What's interesting is that Pokemon Go's revenue is up $800M since January alone, nearly doubling the amount earned in the preceding 18 months. Sensor Tower estimates that worldwide daily revenue generated is in the vicinity of $2M per day. The most prolific spenders are players in the United States ($607M), Japan ($500M), Germany ($96M), Great Britain ($77M) and Taiwan ($48M). Android users outnumber iOS users at 58% and 42% respectively. Niantic continues to refine and expand the game two years in, most recently adding the much-anticipated ability to trade Pokémon with friends, and acquiring technology that will make the core monster catching mechanics even more rewarding for players. It has even decided to license the game’s engine to other developers, ensuring a legacy for Pokémon GO that extends beyond … [Read more...] about Speaking of Niantic….Pokemon Go Has Generated $1.8 BILLION Since Launch

MMO Week in Review: Just Daybreak things (April 29, 2018)
Support Massively OP on PatreonWere you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review! Arg, this week you guys. Daybreak is currently wading in the aftermath of one of the biggest unforced errors I’ve seen in the MMO genre in a decade, from inexplicably deciding to answer Russian sanction rumors by abruptly claiming it’s not owned by the company it’s said it’s been owned by for three years to laying off over 70 people in what was allegedly an unrelated H1Z1 crisis. It’s such a mess that you probably missed our the farewell to EVE Online’s Andie Nordren and our impressions pieces on Project Gorgon, Sea of Thieves, and Elder Scrolls Online’s Summerset. Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO … [Read more...] about MMO Week in Review: Just Daybreak things (April 29, 2018)
MMO Year in Review: Columbus Nova who? (April 2018)
We’re taking a time-machine back through our MMO coverage, month by month, to hit the highlights and frame our journey before we head into 2019! MMO company Daybreak stunned the entire gaming industry in April, absurdly telling little old Massively OP that Columbus Nova, the company Daybreak claimed had purchased it in 2015, had in fact never been owned by said company. Compounding it all were a round of mass layoffs, high-level departures, an overt wave of evidence deletion, and of course the Russian connection that worried MMO players the company was in big trouble. This story wasn’t just the biggest bombshell in April but the biggest in several years. In happier news, TERA made it to console, Secret World Legends journeyed to South Africa, Ultima Online went free-to-play, and we deep-dived Summerset, Pantheon, and Ashes of Creation. Sadly, EVE Online couldn’t hang on to Andie Nordgren, Guild Wars 2 faced down spyware allegation, Boss Key imploded, … [Read more...] about MMO Year in Review: Columbus Nova who? (April 2018)
WRUP: Massively Overpowered new hero overview patch 5.3.2 edition
After several years, the metagame for Massively Overpowered has gotten stale, so we’ve decided to carefully rebalance our characters for increased engagement. But then we thought about it and that sounded like it would be a whole lot of work, so we’re just tossing a whole lot of new characters into the mix like it’s 1998 and we’re releasing a Capcom fighting game. Here’s the quick rundown: Andy McAdams is like a cop with a shady past in that he’s writing a law and business column, but not in any other way. His ultimate ability summons an aging Danny Glover to express that he’s getting too old for this. You can use him for jungling, probably. Ben Griggs will be taking on duties for our The Elder Scrolls Online column when he’s not busy serving as a literal elder scroll. He costs four colorless mana to put into play and can be tapped to apply +2/+2 to wolves. Carlo Alday Lacsina has traveled back in time to warn us of impending disaster, … [Read more...] about WRUP: Massively Overpowered new hero overview patch 5.3.2 edition
