Tencent is working on locking kids out of Chinese games using facial recognition tech

So add this one to your creepy dystopian nightmare-fuel bin: In the war on supposed gaming addiction, at least one corporation is hoping to use facial recognition to stop kids from playing games. The company here is Tencent, because of course it is; according to the BBC, it’s testing facial recognition for “thousands” of players of the extremely popular Honour of Kings mobile title in major Chinese cities. (You’ll recognize it better from its global name, Arena of Valor.) “Under pressure from local regulators, Tencent introduced restrictions in July 2017 to limit under-12s to one hour of gameplay a day and 13- to 18-year-olds to a maximum of two hours,” the Beeb reports. “Last month, the company added a real-name registration system to encourage players to keep to the rules. The facial-recognition test appears to be a further effort to discourage young players from trying to circumvent the time limits.” The move appears to be pertinent to … [Read more...] about Tencent is working on locking kids out of Chinese games using facial recognition tech

EVE Online: The Chinese Exodus To Tranquility

One of EVE Online’s most unique and heavily advertised features is the fact that everything within it takes place on just one server. Since 2006, however, that hasn’t been entirely true, with the launch of EVE China separating that region of the game off from the rest of the world. This isn’t unusual, with massive games like World of Warcraft and League of Legends also having their own China bound localisations and servers, in order to reach government approval in the region. For EVE Online however, it provided a fascinating mirror of a sandbox, as Tranquility and Serenity developed in parallel.  advertisement  At least, that was the case. Taking a look at the rankings for the Tranquility server now, we can see that the Chinese alliance Fraternity tops the number of systems owned, and a second chinese alliance Rangers Regiment comes in sixth. This transition hasn’t been a peaceful one either, with a nearly 500 man clash in Fraternity territory last … [Read more...] about EVE Online: The Chinese Exodus To Tranquility

– NetEase provides more details to Chinese media about new mobile MMO

Many Diablo fans have raged about Diablo Immortal since the game’s announcement over the weekend at BlizzCon 2018, but let’s face the fact – Diablo Immortal will still be launching. While touted as a co-development project with long-time Chinese partner NetEase, the technical development parts are mostly done by NetEase, including the game engine. Several Chinese media outlets managed to speak with NetEase for more details. • Diablo Immortal is developed using NetEase’s in-house Messiah game engine. • Development on Messiah started in 2010, and was first used for a game in 2013. The game engine was made specifically for developing optimized 3D mobile games. • NetEase has a partnership with Qualcomm to optimize Messiah for their mobile chips. • Messiah supports technologies such as Physically based Rendering (PBR), Normal mapping, GPU Particle, Real-time lighting and more, drastically lowering the number of game details lost while playing. … [Read more...] about – NetEase provides more details to Chinese media about new mobile MMO

– Chinese government might ban battle royale games

As everyone in the gaming industry is talking about the glowing success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the Chinese government has taken notice as well. Recently, the gaming branch office of China Audio And Video And Numeral Publishing Association released an official statement about the game. To summarize, the article condemned battle royale games as having too much blood and gore, and violent content. The article even went on to compare this genre with the ancient Rome arena fights, where the singular aim of survival goes against the Republic of China’s moral principles, and negatively influences teenagers’ physical and mental health. As such, the gaming branch office sent out a warning that it will be hard to approve battle royale games to launch in China. It also recommends local companies not to develop or publish such games. At the same time, esports and livestream platforms should not promote such these games as well. It is important to note that there have … [Read more...] about – Chinese government might ban battle royale games

Netease talks up Diablo Immortal to Chinese fans and onlookers

While American fans at this weekend’s BlizzCon went into full-on meltdown mode, NetEase was also telling Chinese fans about the upcoming Diablo Immortal. It turns out that yes, Netease is taking the technical lead on the game, with the title using its in-house Messiah engine, which was built for 3D-accelerated games on smartphones. It’s been used on a few other titles before now. Not that you’ll have to have a smartphone; the NetEase team is fine with people using emulators to play the mobile-only game on PCs in that roundabout way. The company reiterated some of Blizzard’s now-standard talking points: There are no firm plans yet on the game’s business model or on things like PvP and guild mechanics; for that matter, it’s not yet set in stone whether Android and iOS players will use the same servers. NetEase did also confirm that the game will not be as dark as the PC titles, although that seems to be a reference to the visuals being brighter so … [Read more...] about Netease talks up Diablo Immortal to Chinese fans and onlookers
