Trion chose a perfect time to launch their Rift Prime server. The game originally launched in March 2011 – and this little blog here got started in March 2011 as well. This is not a coincidence, however, as Rift (and the upcoming Guild Wars 2) was the main content I wrote about at that point. For this reason, March is always a very nostalgic month for me! It’s Rift’s 7th anniversary, but it’s also our blog’s 7th anniversary in a couple of days! I still remember how I fell in love with Rift: I played during one of the beta weekend events or whatever it was. The game was lagging and I did not enjoy myself in there at all – yes, perfect start right there… ;) Coming from Warhammer Online, I was afraid that they could not get Rift to run properly either as the gameplay felt just as sluggish with a bad frame rate as WAR had done. I think it was two weeks later, that I got to try the game again and all the issues I’d had before were gone. The … [Read more...] about Rift Prime and Nostalgia

Yes, that’s right. I made a Pokemon reference. Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Mass Effect 2 (and to a lesser extent, Mass Effect 1). You have been warned! Areas covered: The Convict, The Krogan, Horizon, The Quarian, The Assassin, The Justicar My adventures with Mass Effect 2 continued over the last two days as Shepard travels all over the galaxy recruiting her team for the final mission against the enemy. Three days of playing under my belt and I’m still not done getting them all (yep, this is going to be a loooong game)! And wow, what a great bunch of characters. I’m already frustrated that I only ever get to take up to two of them with me out on missions. I did notice one thing as I was playing. So far, Mass Effect 2 is fitting the “formula” that their other games tend to follow, i.e. completing the initial mission, followed by going to 3 or 4 different places before going to a final destination, which then culminates in an … [Read more...] about Mass Effect 2 Companions: Gotta Catch ’em All!
Bombing Run Yesterday was an interesting day, partially because I dinged another level and am now officially in my “late thirties”. Most of the morning was spent in preparation for my wife to fly in, and doing a last minute run through the house to “pick up” a bit. Honestly this year I somehow managed to pick up successfully as I went and didn’t really hit the point where I simply stopped caring that there was a pizza box on the kitchen counter. So it really only took a few minutes, and I streamed some Warlords of Draenor while waiting. For a reason that I did not know at the time… none of my voice over was coming through in the stream, but I will get to that later. I picked up my wife around noon and we ran across town to my favorite Indian restaurant… where I proceeded to order something completely new in honor of the occasion. My standby has always been Chicken Tika Masala medium hot, and no matter how many … [Read more...] about Recording Console Games
Last night did not go exactly as expected, but I am pretty pleased with the results anyways. Last night was a good night, and it started from the moment I got home and got a bunch of things accomplished while waiting on the rice cooker. After a furious round of chores, my wife and I sat down to eat and then I was off to play some PS4. With my leg in its current mauled state it hurts to sit on the couch given that in order to use my laptop I need to use the recliner. This ends up putting pressure on the four wounds and while I can take it for a few minutes… it doesn’t exactly make for comfortable gaming. As a result I am largely upstairs right now, and other than being isolated from my wife it does give me access to my gaming consoles and my legit gaming desktop. The original goal for last night was going to involve running around and doing stuff with some friends in Destiny, but while waiting for that to happen I decided to start … [Read more...] about Warlock Banana
With every Age of Conan patch since the launch of Rise of the Godslayer, Khitai Proper seems more playable for my Priest of Mitra. However, last night I was still hit twice by the dreaded “Out of memory” message after the game so unceremoniously crashed me to desktop. Ironically, I don’t get the memory leak problem when running AoC on DX10. Instead, I get a whole host of other problems, ranging from atrocious FPS values to crumbling environments and other graphical glitches. Thus far, still no problems in AoC’s “old world” nor in the Gateway to Khitai. Good news for my new Khitan toon as well as my Bear Shaman alt, but as for my level-capped PoM she’s SOL (save me, Funcom!) I’m able to do some light questing and exploring on her for the time being, but forget rep grinding or anything else that requires exuberant fighting. That means a little while longer to wait for my tiger mount, but I was still able to take some nice screenshots … [Read more...] about /Gawk – The Hills Of Khitai Ring With The Sounds Of My Lamentation
