Several conversations I saw after our report on the new RMT mounts in Guild Wars 2 got me thinking about how the MMO community uses the word whale. I had used the word to refer to the kind of person who buys a ton of RNG-based lockboxes to get every last one of the shiny bits and bobs within, but the reality is that anyone who pays a respectable flat fee for a purely cosmetic upgrade has also been hooked on some sort of fishing rod or other, even if it’s not a harpoon. So let’s consider the numbers behind the terminology in this week’s Massively Overthinking. How much money spent makes you an MMO whale? Does it apply only to cosmetics or lockboxes? When does the “whale” term kick in for people who buy early access, collector editions, or 10 expansion boxes over the course of an MMO’s life? Are most gamers more properly dolphins or something in 2018? Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): There’s no hard number for me. In fact, for me, I … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: How much money spent makes you an MMO whale?
I felt that there could not be a blog post series about housing (with Lord of the Rings Online, Aion and Rift) without Everquest 2. Even though I have never really gotten into the game, the reason I tried it out in the first place was the housing. So, I’m very honored that Rakuno offered to write a guest post about this game’s housing as he’s been playing it for a very long time. Also, have a good look at the gallery at the end of this posting. 132 screenshots showing off the housing in Everquest 2! If you like what you see here, please also be sure to check out his blog! *** Whenever the discussion of housing comes up in an existing MMO or one in development, Everquest 2’s housing system is often mentioned. There are good reasons for that, as housing in Everquest 2 is certainly one of the most feature rich of the current available MMOs. It is one of the features of the game that has been around since its launch in 2004 and has been improving ever since. … [Read more...] about Housing in MMOs: Everquest 2
Last night didn’t exactly go as I had originally planned but what actually happened was probably better. There were a couple of things that I knew I had on my list for the evening, one of which was to run to target and attempt to find clearance valentines candy for my wife’s classroom. There are several candies that she uses in lab exercises like kisses, m&m’s and skittles. The scene in that candy aisle was just insane with random display boxes strewn everywhere and essentially everything mostly gone. We did manage to scavenge some plain old fashioned Hershey’s Kisses in valentines packaging for the 50% off discount. Prior to going into the store I called in a take out order across the street at Baja Jack’s Burrito Shack, so we picked up our orders… for me a steak fajita quesadilla and for my wife steak fajita nacho platter. I flipped over to Twitch to see if anyone was streaming, and I appeared to be auto … [Read more...] about Delightful Nonsense

Pour boiling tungsten on her car: According to Wikipedia, tungsten has a melting point of 6192 °F. That is very hot, and probably will be difficult to contain in any sort of container. Its boiling point is even hotter, at 10706 °F. Still, if you can pour a vat of boiling tungsten onto her car, aside from causing massive damage to the surrounding environment, she’ll be suitably impressed. Get a doctorate in alligators from the University of Pennsylvania: This was such a popular method in the 1960s that the slang term “gator girl” was created for women considered desirable enough to justify an eight-year course of study.
