What Do You Meme? Using Memes for Marketing

If you’ve been surfing the web at all over the past few years, you’ve probably noticed an abundance of what internet users refer to as “memes.” While the internet generation would love to claim the creation of this social media icon, the word in its current meaning has been around since the mid-1970s and memes themselves have been around since practically the dawn of man. A meme, by definition, is “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.” Recently, memes have been appearing as repeated images or actions shared through social media. For example, by sharing pictures of friends “planking” (lying down completely flat) in unusual places, or by adding funny tag lines to odd pictures, like those found on the website ICanHasCheezburger.com. A meme that has received a lot of attention recently is the Ridiculously Photogenic Guy. Snapped during the 2012 Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, South … [Read more...] about What Do You Meme? World of Warcraft sparks world tree memes, tours Tiragarde Sound

With a week to go until Battle for Azeroth releases, players are running out of time to bone up on all of the features and zones coming with World of Warcraft’s seventh expansion. So consider this your homework for today, to read up on the naval-themed zone of Tiragarde Sound. Doesn’t sound like Alliance characters are going to have it easy here: “Any hopes for a warm reception in Tiragarde Sound will be quickly dashed upon your arrival. Wounds run deep between the Alliance and the Kul Tirans, inflicted by the tragic events that led to the death of Daelin Proudmoore. Your mission of diplomacy will begin on rough political seas, and the journey to redemption will be a long one.” Meanwhile, the recent travesty of Teldrassil’s burning has done more than rile up players to protest Sylvanas’ action — it’s created a whole new wave of memes to keep us entertained. One good one? The confirmation of a new Horde ally race, the salt elemental … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft sparks world tree memes, tours Tiragarde Sound

Massively OP’s 2018 Blooper Awards: Schlag meme of the year

Massively OP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards conclude today with our blooper award for Schlag meme of the year. This is one of my favorite awards of the year. As our our regulars surely know, Schlag Sweetleaf is our resident comment section Master of the Meme, who crafts everything from weird to gross to hilarious gifs for big stories. He’s amazing. Giving him his own award every year is the least we can do! So what was his best meme of the year? In context, it was about New World and the community reaction to leaks about what was going to be in it. Of course, I have some other favorites! Reaction to “Warcraft Go” rumors: Reaction to the Daybreak layoffs right before Christmas: On The Flower of Knighthood’s (TFOK) waffling on female characters out of a desire to remain faithful to its setting. Hang in there, Joan. This good-natured meme for art MMO Occupy White Walls almost edged out the New World one for the top spot. … [Read more...] about Massively OP’s 2018 Blooper Awards: Schlag meme of the year

Massively Overthinking: Tackling the ‘big four MMOs’ meme

Over the last couple of months, there’s been a meme floating around the MMORPG subreddit. Someone will ask that the community recommend a game, and the responses will all look like “WoW/ESO/XIV/GW2” referring to the only four games that really matter according to the meme: World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV, and Guild Wars 2. I get why the sub would resort to this, given how many “what game should I play” threads they see every week. But I wonder if it doesn’t do the genre an injustice, since obviously there are far more games out there, and successful ones, at that. So for this week’s Overthinking, I’ve asked our staff to reflect on the “big four” meme. Do you agree those are the biggest MMOs, or the four MMOs most worthy of consideration, anyway, and which other MMOs should be on the list? Andy McAdams: The four games listed are the “safest” choices of the MMO world – they … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Tackling the ‘big four MMOs’ meme
