Funcom roundup: Conan Exiles’ thrall hunger system, Mutant Year Zero’s new video, and Secret World Legends’ Masquerade

Funcom is up to some stuff today. Over in Conan Exiles, the Pets Update is live, or rather half of it is live, and it’s not the half with pets, and it’s only on PC for now. OK, let me start that over: Midnight Grove, the thrall hunger system, and the new Jhebbal Sag religion are live. Pets themselves are coming next week. The thrall hunger system is probably the most interesting bit. “As part of this update we’re rolling out thrall hunger, which requires you to feed your thralls in order to keep them alive,” Funcom explains. “The objective of this is to add nuance and flavor, not grinding.” It’s sort of like feeding a small house pet when you’re on vacay: “Food dispensers (Thrall Pot for thralls and Feedbox for pets) will push smaller amounts of food to each companion before moving onto the next companion. The net result of this is that all your companions will be more equally fed and you’ll need smaller … [Read more...] about Funcom roundup: Conan Exiles’ thrall hunger system, Mutant Year Zero’s new video, and Secret World Legends’ Masquerade

Conan Exiles Looks Back At 2018, Talks About Plans For 2019

Conan Exiles developer Funcom continues the year-end tradition of almost every other company in the world of looking back at the past year and giving hints about what lies ahead in their latest newsletter, scantily-clad barbarians with Santa hats included. It’s been a very eventful year for the sandbox survival MMORPG with a total of 70 patches released across all platforms: 30 for the PC, 21 for the Xbox, and 19 patches on the PlayStation 4. “We’ve also released 4 paid DLC packs with new armors, weapons, building pieces, placeables and pet skins,” says the devs. “Shoutout to our amazing art team who have been working tirelessly on making all of these amazing looking extras.” As a brand new year comes around, Funcom says that they have more updates to roll out. “Come January 31st, the game will have been available for two years! We have several more updates and bug fixes to roll out, after all, including 4 more dungeons that we still … [Read more...] about Conan Exiles Looks Back At 2018, Talks About Plans For 2019

GDC 2018: Funcom’s Tor Egil Andersen on Conan Exiles’ early access, launch, and beyond

My initial impressions of Conan Exiles, written just about a year ago, weren’t exactly glowing. While I know not every game I play needs to appeal to me, so much of the genre just felt like a repetition of what we’d already seen countless times before: a survival game in early access filled with bugs, naked people killing each other, and nothing that really made living in the game world feel worth it. Character progression felt bland, building was significantly harder than destruction, and the guild recruitment button on day one resulted in axing people in the face. But that was a year ago. MJ has covered in-depth what the game’s done right since then, but even I’ve noticed just how much Funcom’s done to bolster the title. It made buildings more difficult to destroy. More emotes came in. More PvE content. Climbing. New zones. And then the launch announcement about a year after EA, with February’s honest look at the game’s future. … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Funcom’s Tor Egil Andersen on Conan Exiles’ early access, launch, and beyond

First Impressions: Struggling to survive in Conan Exiles

I am no stranger to covering survival sandboxes for Massively OP. I wrestled with dinosaurs before ARK: Survival Evolved was a thing. I got kidnapped and tried to drown myself in a puddle, spent days building a glorified shack before hackers or server admins could destroy them, and got a better understanding of what it’s like to be an Asian gamer thanks to Valve’s social experiment. There have been some good memories for sure, but the cancelled games, broken promises, and fact that most of the genre is in an infinite non-launch state are just some of the reasons I’ve been losing faith in online, multiplayer survival games. I love the idea of PvP allowing for meaningful social gameplay, but in reality, I mostly experience only ganking. But without PvP, I generally get so bored of PvE that I run into the arms of a (J)RPG so I can get drama and permadeath in a finished product, often without kids screaming at me to stop moving and just die. But here I … [Read more...] about First Impressions: Struggling to survive in Conan Exiles

Conan Exiles brings PlayStation 4 up to parity, is still working to address critical issues

Remember back when Conan Exile’s release made it the newest and hottest kid on the block? We were all so much younger, back in early May. Now we’re older and know better that Funcom’s survival sandbox still needs some work to bring it up to par. The studio looks like it’s in a “shoring up” phase right now, especially with the release of last week’s PlayStation 4 parity patch. This brought in an AFK kicker, warpaints, thralls that regenerate health, a healing balance pass, and plenty of quality-of-life adjustments. Also, you’re now limited to a 600-meter height limit on structures (“This should not impact players unless they are re-enacting Jack and the Beanstalk,” said Funcom). Funcom also laid out a distinction between hotfixes and bigger updates, in case you all are new to online gaming. “We are currently doing a lot of smaller hotfixes for crashes and other critical issues either reported by the community or … [Read more...] about Conan Exiles brings PlayStation 4 up to parity, is still working to address critical issues
