Set Phasers To Diversion! I get the feeling that, if you want to think of Star Trek Online and Champions Online as brothers, Star Trek Online is the more successful younger brother who got all the love from mom and dad, while Champions Online was forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs when his room was emptied to make room for the new baby. In a recent interview with Jack Emmert, Jack announced that Star Trek Online has “well over 100 thousand subscribers,” an announcement that is great…until you look at the lack of announcement of Champions Online’s subscriber numbers. I don’t want to suggest that Champions Online is doing poorly, but I have always said that what someone doesn’t say speaks a lot more than what they do say, and this lack of information in regards to Champions Online may suggest that the game is not going as great as Cryptic had hoped. Champions Online today launched Revelation, the latest expansion pack that brings new … [Read more...] about Cryptic Studios: Subscriptions, Diversions, Neverwinter Nights?
It’s been almost two years since Bill Roper has had anything to do with Cryptic Studios, but with some of the recent money-related decisions made by the developer, you would never know he’d left. Not long ago, Cryptic introduced lockboxes, cash shop items that have the chance at offering valuable items to the players who buy them. Apparently the lockboxes constitute gambling in some countries, including the Netherlands, and according to several users on the Star Trek Online forums, are being investigated by various government bodies. And if your laws do prohibit such gambling, Cryptic’s Borticus wants you to know that Cryptic is listening. Not so the company can react, just so they know which country to ban. I hope you realize that the most likely course of action here, if any is taken, is that the STO becomes unplayable in the Netherlands. IP blocks, proxy blocks, etc. And I know what you’re thinking, but you have absolutely nothing to worry about for … [Read more...] about Lockboxes Illegal? Cryptic Would Rather Dump Your Country
Sad news for content creators, Cryptic Studios has announced that it is retiring the Foundry system for both Neverwinter and Star Trek Online. The announced closure of the Foundries will occur on April 11, 2019. "This decision was not made lightly; the Foundry was a passion project for many of us." the blog reads. The cited reason for the closure is that "the legacy knowledge required to maintain the Foundry at our quality standards is no longer available". We understand this decision impacts our incredibly passionate and creative players. We wanted to thank you all for the incredible amount of work you have shared with us and the entire community through the characters, worlds, and stories you’ve created. We don’t want to leave the contributions of both Foundry authors and enthusiasts unrecognized, so we will be providing the following rewards to our amazing Foundry community. All players who contributed to the Foundry or participated will be gifted mission badges … [Read more...] about Cryptic Studios Retiring Foundry System for Both Neverwinter & Star Trek Online
Cryptic Studios announced today that they're removing the Foundry System in both Neverwinter and Star Trek Online on April 11th. For those unfamiliar with the Foundry, it allows players to create their own play made dungeons / stories within both MMORPGs. It's been a personal favorite feature of mine and many others in these games, but apparently the company lacked the "legacy knowledge required to maintain the Foundry". This essentially means the people currently working at Cryptic don't know how to keep it updated and the original programmers have long since left the company. Cryptic also stated: “Our goal is to continue creating top-notch content for our current and upcoming games – and the development time and resources required to maintain the Foundry would impede on these new features and systems. To reiterate, this decision does not impact any other game feature or content development for Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, Champions Online, or future titles.” … [Read more...] about Cryptic Studios Removing Foundry System in Neverwinter / STO
