Top 5 RPG Games That Would Be Awesome As MMORPGs

We get it, some folks hate these discussions that blur the line between single player RPGs and MMORPGs. But hey, we’re bias towards the MMO genre, so deal with it. Here are five of our favorite RPGs that we think would be kick-ass as massive multiplayer online games. 5. Dark Souls If you really are a sucker for hard games and dying often is more of a stepping stone rather than a sign of defeat, then Dark Souls is the perfect game for you. Dark Souls is the epitome of RPG games that provides brutal challenge for players, most noticeably in the game’s combat. Even the most humble of trash mobs in Dark Souls can wipe the floor clean with your blood. Every move you make becomes crucial to winning the fight. While that may sound terrifying, the feeling of accomplishment after a successful boss fight is euphoric. And that’s an experience that Dark Souls can magnificently provide. I think it would be an awesome MMORPG. The genre has become a festering ground for games that … [Read more...] about Top 5 RPG Games That Would Be Awesome As MMORPGs

Maybe I’ll Prey

Exciting news! I bought a new game! I say “new”, it’s Prey, turns out it was actually released more than two years ago but I’m just so plugged-in and up-to-speed with games these days it had totally passed me by until Melmoth tipped me off. I think I’d seen bits and pieces about it around release time but assumed it was something to do with the 2006 Prey, whereas it’s an entirely new game that just shares the name and a broad theme. It owes far more to the System Shock series; possibly the closest spiritual successor yet, involving (spoiler warning for the first five minutes!) a space station, a lot of whacking stuff with a wrench, and (spoiler warning for a bit later though it’s massively telegraphed) psionic abilities. System Shock was a real formative gaming experience, it and its various successors comprising some of my all time favourites (System Shock 2, Deus Ex, much of Bioshock), greatest disappointments (Deus Ex: Invisible War) and … [Read more...] about Maybe I’ll Prey

Perfect Ten: Older PC games that would make for great MMOs

Video games had a huge impact on my childhood and teenage years, imprinting themselves onto my psyche for all of the struggles and elation that they produced. While I did play consoles in my youth, most of my gaming time was spent on the PC, particularly during the 1990s. As such, I have a strong fondness (nostalgia goggles alert!) for older games, to the point where I still play and blog about them. While some definitely have not withstood the test of time, you’d be surprised how many older PC titles are still quite enjoyable and even downright compelling today. I think we all have our lists of game franchises that we wish were made into MMORPGs, and today I’m going to look at 10 of some of my favorite older PC games (most, but not all, from the ’90s) and give a few ideas how each could work as a proper MMO. 1. Deus Ex Still an incredible game to this day, Deus Ex truly delivered on the promise of playing your way, with multiple paths and techniques that could be … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: Older PC games that would make for great MMOs

[Not Massive] Last Week’s Steam Games You Might Enjoy

I’m trying something new today. Last week saw over 375 new games listed on Steam, and get this: Roughly half of them didn’t even release. Steam has become such a dumping ground for trash that out of nearly 400 titles slated for release between July 28 and August 3, half of the developers never bothered actually putting them out. And the other half? Don’t get me started. Hentai slider puzzles, trashy RPG maker games, a Brian Boitano simulator, and more! It’s enough to make you not want to bother even looking at the release list. And that’s where I come in. I took a gander through the release list so you don’t have to, and pulled out more than a dozen games that look like they may actually be worth playing. Please note that this is solely based off of first impressions of the gameplay videos, reviews, and description of the title itself. I haven’t played the games and thus make no statement on their quality or whether you the reader will enjoy … [Read more...] about [Not Massive] Last Week’s Steam Games You Might Enjoy

A Pack Rat’s Tail

I’m a terrible pack rat, I just can’t throw anything away. Maybe it stems from Zork and similar adventure games, where you’d habitually pick up anything that wasn’t nailed down in case it was useful later (and if it was nailed down, you could use that crowbar you picked up earlier to fix that…) This carried over to computer RPGs, where my characters would stagger under the weight of their sword, a spare sword (in case the first one was lost or broken), a backup spare sword, an ornamental sword which wasn’t very good for actually fighting with but looked nice, a two handed sword for extra damage, a shield in case defence was the better option, a mace in case of opponents more susceptible to bludgeoning, a glaive, a guisarme, a glaive–guisarme, a glaive–glaive–glaive–guisarme–glaive etc. I’d amass enough of a collection of scrolls, potions, rings and amulets to set up a library with a particularly well stocked bar … [Read more...] about A Pack Rat’s Tail
