MMO Ecosystems
What is a Game Yesterday I got involved in a long winded discussion about the effects a major guild dying, has on a game… the game in question of course was World of Warcraft. There were a couple of different points of view floating around, and they largely centered around what the definition of the game meant to each person. Some folks chose to take the literal view and focus on the mechanics of the game itself, and argue that the loss of a big guild does nothing to change the way the game functionally plays. I however choose to view the game like an ecosystem, where quite honestly the actual game mechanics become one of the least important parts of shaping daily interaction. When a game launches, it ceases to be all about the pushing of buttons and the getting of loot. Much like a workplace has little to do with the rules and regulations that you set up ahead of time… but instead the interactions between the employees and the general … [Read more...] about MMO Ecosystems
Welfare Epics
This mornings topic is going to veer off in an odd direction, but stay with me. Yesterday I saw the above tweet and I have to say the term “Welfare Epics” is one that bothers me. Not that I mind the above tweet mind you, but the fact that it is apparently still a thing bothers me. For some background I remember when I first heard the term was during Burning Crusade. When the Arena system was introduced it also opened up a new gearing path, in that so long as you played a minimum amount of matches each week you got some points based on your current arena rating. As a result raiders like myself saw this as a quick and easy way to augment our gear, or at least mitigate the bad luck in getting drops. I remember that by the time we started Gruuls Lair, several of our more pvp centric players already had most of a set of gear… or at least two or three pieces and it prompted the rest of us on the deeply carebear spectrum of the world to … [Read more...] about Welfare Epics
Weapons I Will Miss
I cannot fully explain just how damned hard it is going to be to make it through today. What I mean by that is I did not take the day off for the launch of Destiny 2 on PC, and I know that it will be launching halfway through the day and I will start wishing I was home and able to be playing. While I have played the hell out of Destiny 2 on the PS4, the PC beta just felt better to me than the console interface. Destiny 1 was the game that essentially taught me how to play shooters on a console, and in spite of how much progress I have made in my ability to get the controller to do what I want it to do… it still feels like a foreign territory. When I sat down to play the PC beta, it was like coming home… everything that had been slightly off with Destiny was set right just by being able to use a keyboard and mouse. I realize that after the hundreds of hours that I have poured into the console version there is going to be an … [Read more...] about Weapons I Will Miss

Cheat Day One of the rules of the “Grand Experiment” has been that I would sit down each morning and write a blog post. A lot of my friends in the blogosphere write their content at their leisure and stage the publishing at a date of their choosing. There is technically nothing wrong with this practice, but the entire idea behind the experiment, was to force myself to write every day. So as a result I have always considered it cheating to do what I am doing right now… writing a topic the night before I intend to post it. These lofty ideals are one thing, but every now and then real life throws me for a loop. Generally speaking on the weekend my posts end up being considerably later because sometimes I have to accommodate life in the process. However our weekend plans have been altered quite a bit and as a result my wife and I are carpooling together tomorrow. This means that I won’t really have my traditional “drink … [Read more...] about Thumper Logic
