Black Desert Online has earned over $1B in total revenue across all platforms (PC, Mobile, and Xbox One) since launch according to Pearl Abyss, the game's developer. While the game's mobile release has been a huge hit in South Korea, Japan, and elsewhere in Asia, it's not yet available in English. Fortunately, that's set to change this year. Activision Blizzard reported their Q4, 2018 earnings report today which missed analyst estimates; revenues came in at $2.84B while analysts expected $3.04B. The company also laid off employees in non-development positions, mostly in publishing and eSports. On a more positive note, the company has committed to increasing its development budget with the total number of developers working on Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Overwatch, Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Diablo set to increase by 20% in 2019. Activision Blizzard also extended their partnership with Netease until 2023. Netease currently publishes all of Activision Blizzard's games in China and is co-developing Diablo: Immortal. It's been a tough for Activision Blizzard lately. The company's stock price is down 50% since Blizzcon and the infamous Diablo: Immortal PR disaster. The game successfully broke its goal of 100k Euro this past July and earned an additional 10% on top of that, while this is an excellent start, the number of un-reached stretch goals as well as my familiarity with similar projects. For example, Albion raised nearly $10,000,000 as a game with a similar mission, similar estimated testing phase, and using the same engine(Unity.) Albion, of course, was developing for multiple platforms and went through many extreme design iterations which certainly could have "wasted their money." Even if Fractured is set to be created on a much smaller scale, I feel €110,000 is certainly a very conservative estimate of not just the funds it will take to complete the game as it is envisioned right now, but also accommodate for additional unexpected expenses likely to come from the development of such a game.
