It’s hard to look at Rockstar North and not see dollar signs (or pound signs) around the massive success of Grand Theft Auto V, but this week’s news is sure to set some fires in more than a few bellies as the company’s finances come into more scrutiny. TaxWatch UK a thinktank that tracks business earnings reported this week that Rockstar North has made an estimated $5 billion in profit over the last six years. Despite this massive amount of profit, the company still determined that it deserved tax relief and claimed £42 million between 2015 and 2017, or 19% of all government credits issued to the industry during that period. And with all of this income, can you guess how much Rockstar North paid in taxes? That’s right, absolutely nothing between 2009 and 2018. The thinktank noted: “It is outrageous that the UK taxpayer is being asked to shell out tens of millions of pounds in subsidy to the developers of Grand Theft Auto, when at the time that the … [Read more...] about [NM] Rockstar North Paid No Taxes, Earned Tax Relief

Activision Blizzard reported their Q4, 2018 earnings report today which missed analyst estimates; revenues came in at $2.84B while analysts expected $3.04B. The company also laid off employees in non-development positions, mostly in publishing and eSports. On a more positive note, the company has committed to increasing its development budget with the total number of developers working on Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Overwatch, Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Diablo set to increase by 20% in 2019. Activision Blizzard also extended their partnership with Netease until 2023. Netease currently publishes all of Activision Blizzard's games in China and is co-developing Diablo: Immortal. It's been a tough for Activision Blizzard lately. The company's stock price is down 50% since Blizzcon and the infamous Diablo: Immortal PR disaster. The game successfully broke its goal of 100k Euro this past July and earned an additional 10% on top of that, while this is an excellent start, the number of un-reached stretch goals as well as my familiarity with similar projects. For example, Albion raised nearly $10,000,000 as a game with a similar mission, similar estimated testing phase, and using the same engine(Unity.) Albion, of course, was developing for multiple platforms and went through many extreme design iterations which certainly could have "wasted their money." Even if Fractured is set to be created on a much smaller scale, I feel €110,000 is certainly a very conservative estimate of not just the funds it will take to complete the game as it is envisioned right now, but also accommodate for additional unexpected expenses likely to come from the development of such a game. For example, if you were to put one of your fundamental ideas into practice and find that it didn't work well with real players or something … [Read more...] about Is Dynamight Studios Actively Seeking a Publisher/ Are Plans in Place to Earn Development Funds Post-Kickstarter?
