Before Comic-Con launches its official museum in San Diego, it will host a special exhibit celebrating 20 years of the fantasy MMO EverQuest. The exhibit will be a special 2-day affair featuring not only art and artifacts related to game development, but also special programs and panels. The event will take place at the future home of the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park (2131 Pan America Plaza, San Diego — just in case any of you are in the neighborhood). During the two day exhibit, fans will be able to attend panels and signings featuring members of the game’s development team. Daybreak Games and the Comic-Con Museum announced they will host “EverQuest 20: A Living Legend” this month. The event will occur from April 27th through April 28th (Saturday and Sunday), to celebrate the franchise that popularized MMORPGs 20 years ago. In addition to showing off original art, the exhibit will be accompanied by special programs and panels, which are listed below. The event will be hosted at The Comic-Con Museum’s future home in Balboa Park (2131 Pan America Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101). The original art, concept work, and other key items will be arranged into a community-focused EverQuest timeline, spanning two decades of active development and gameplay. In returning to the video game preservation debate this week following the DMCA exceptions granted to museums and archivists allowing them to archive online games, I got really angry all over again at the ESA. Earlier this year, the bajillion-dollar video game publishing industry lobby fought tooth and nail to stop preservation efforts, smearing a freakin’ charity museum as degenerate software pirates to thwart their work. And why would they do this? They’re scared, fam. They’re terrified that this is one more step toward allowing consumers access to old online games instead of leaving us no choice but to shell out new ones. And they should be!
