As a longtime Star Wars fan and former Star Wars Galaxies player, I’ve known there were plenty of emulators out there ripe for playing on. The code for the game is open source. In fact, there was a brief time where I was looking to set up my own server for the game, but I just don’t have time to do that anymore. But recently, I was surprised to find out how many SWG emu servers there are – so many different servers that I’m not exactly sure which one to get into. That’s where you guys come in. Over the next few weeks, I will be jumping into Star Wars Galaxies again here for Hyperspace Beacon, but I want you to tell how to do it in the vein of our Choose My Adventure column. Of course, I would like you to choose the server for me first, and then we will talk about the different classes or profession trees that I can travel up. And being the alt-o-holic that I am, I will likely make more than one character on a server. Fortunately, I am very familiar with … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: Which Star Wars Galaxies emulator should I try first?

It’s a two-for-one Star Wars special in this post today! A short post on the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums shed a very dim light on plans that BioWare has for the MMORPG in the near future. The next steps contain bug fixes for Patch 5.10.1, a look next month at Patch 5.10.2’s feature set, and a SW Celebration Cantina in Chicago that will contain “more news from us on what is coming this year.” So while it’s more than nothing, it’s certainly less than the meaty reveals that SWTOR fans have hoped to see. Perhaps BioWare has its attention turned elsewhere these days? But if you still carry a torch for the long-departed Star Wars Galaxies, creator Raph Koster has a suggestion for your viewing hours. He pointed fans toward Porter Robinson’s EDM album that was inspired partly by the MMO and its sunset. You can check that music out as well as its artist streaming and talking about the game after the break. … [Read more...] about SWTOR gives a skimpy roadmap while Star Wars Galaxies is remembered… in song form
I have been buried in Star Wars: The Old Republic lore for about 8 years now, and it pains me to admit this, but I think I was wrong about the motivation of the primary antagonist. I blame part of that on myself because I didn’t put the pieces of the puzzle together, but at the same time, part of the blame falls to BioWare because the storytellers didn’t see it as a compelling story or spread the pieces out over time in favor of telling stories that were faster and more compelling. From my perspective, we were distracted by the points of views of other characters. Revan and Marr both had a very strong opinion of Vitiate. Senya had an interesting perspective since she was married and had children with the man. Scourge and the Hand had their own perspective, too, but it wasn’t until I watched a video by DuduFilm did it all come together for me. Although Vitiate has a long backstory that builds him as a powerful being wanted to gain power at any cost, he actually suffers … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: We have the Star Wars The Old Republic story all wrong

Depending on your feelings toward Electronic Arts and Star Wars, the news that the publisher is working on a new open-world game set in a galaxy, far, far away may elicit joy or despair (or perhaps cautious optimism). In any case, it appears to be true: EA is reportedly creating a “Star Wars open world” title, at least according to some job listings on the company’s website. A listing for a lead online engineer points to definite “online features and infrastructure” for the game, which certainly raises the possibility of persistent worlds and massively multiplayer crowds. The full job description is as follows: “Lead a team to deliver online features for a Star Wars open world project. You will design, architect and implement the online infrastructure for the project while working with industry-leading central technologies. You will lead a team of engineers to accomplish the goals for the product as well as be an effective people manager to grow … [Read more...] about EA is reportedly making an online, open-world Star Wars game
