Westworld has emerged this fall as the geek obsession TV show, a gunslinger’s LOST about which people can’t stop talking and theorizing and debating. Don’t worry; Massively OP is not suddenly becoming an entertainment website, but I hope you’ll indulge me for a round of Westworld in this edition of Working As Intended because in every episode of the show, I see the MMORPG genre: our players, our proclivities, and our many, many problems. And that’s by design. The show’s premise is that in some sci-fi near-future, wealthy people are able to pay their way into an elaborate, real-world themepark, where corporate gamemasters and engineers and designers control high-functioning human-like robots (“hosts”) in an Old West setting to create whatever roleplaying or entertainment environment the guests are seeking. The players can interact with the robots in extremely realistic ways, from playing cards and having sex to going on … [Read more...] about Working As Intended: Westworld is a sandbox MMORPG on your TV

MMO Week in Review: BlizzCon aftermath, LOTRO’s next big thing
Doesn’t it seem as if BlizzCon was weeks ago? Nope, just one week. So over the last seven days, the gaming community has been mulling over the convention and where it went wrong. Probably not from their phones. Investors didn’t seem too pleased with the Diablo Immortal reaction or the company’s third quarter financials either. Hyperspace Beacon: What will we see on SWTOR’s ‘ancient Jedi world’?
Those who have been paying attention know that Update 5.9.3 launches for Star Wars: The Old Republic on Wednesday, September 26th. And if you’re a huttball fan, then you’re probably looking forward to this addition to the game because it features a brand-new map for the SWTOR-specific game set on the planet Vandin. Many players even took to the PTS to give direct feedback to the developers so that the map works really well. Based on what the developers have stated in their livestreams and on the official forums, this is probably the one PvP map that contains the most adjustments based directly on player feedback. Even though I’m not a PvPer, I will likely jump into that arena more than a few times. But that’s not what I want to talk about today. Today, I want to talk about the planet hinted at in the Fall roadmap. Producer Keith Kanneg wrote about Update 5.10, saying, “[T]he next phase of the SWTOR storyline will kick off with a bang on … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: What will we see on SWTOR’s ‘ancient Jedi world’?
E3 2018: Dissecting the Elder Scrolls VI teaser that broke the internet
Play Elder Scrolls OnlineLast night, Bethesda Director Todd Howard took the E3 stage and practically broke the internet. Of course, he talked about Fallout 76, which everyone expected. After all, Bethesda teased that days earlier, and if he didn’t give us more details, the internet would have rioted. However, the thing that really broke everyone — especially Reddit — only took 36 seconds. He announced what everyone wanted but no one expected: The Elder Scrolls VI. It’s amazing how a small teaser will set people on fire. Massively OP’s chatroom lit up with speculation. Admittedly, it was mostly me and Bree going nuts over this particular game, but we were doing our best to try to determine where The Elder Scrolls VI would take place. All we had was a 36-second fly-by that featured a bunch of rocks, bigger rocks, and a little bit of grass. In other words, it told us practically nothing. But that didn’t stop me from attempting to pull apart each little … [Read more...] about E3 2018: Dissecting the Elder Scrolls VI teaser that broke the internet
Assorted Secret World Tips
On June 29th The Secret World head start began, and from that point on I have been pretty radio silent. I’ve mulled over what to post, but each evening when it came down to the decision of blogging or playing… the game has won out. This is the first game in awhile I have had the burning drive to go home and log in each night. At this point, it is a little far past the appropriate time for a launch impressions post, so I’ve decided to completely skew that and go in a different direction. Quite honestly the game is just so much better than I originally expected it to be. While it is most definitely not going to be the game for everyone, it seems to have nailed pretty much all of my triggers. For years I have said that if a game ever released, that had as detailed of a world as Everquest 2, and a fun combat system I would be hopelessly hooked. So far it is shaping up that The Secret World might just be that game. It still has … [Read more...] about Assorted Secret World Tips
