It has been widely accepted, albeit begrudgingly, that as companies looked for ways to make monetization more enticing, we the gamers have often been at a loss when it comes to directing how these companies actually do it. Enter, the age of the Loot Box. In their simplest form they are miniature RNG loot containers, but in their most devious form they are Pay to Play slot machines with deceiving rewards. Guild Wars 2 has implemented these loot boxes in the form of Black Lion Chests for a very long time, and with loot boxes under the microscope both by gamers and governments alike, is it time that we say goodbye to Black Lion Chests for good? advertisement A Case Against Black Lion ChestsIn Guild Wars 2, we have years of content which has accumulated so many tiny tidbits of exceptional game perks that I’d argue most gamers aren’t even privy to them all. There are quite a few special knick knacks that players will acquire such as revive orbs, … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2

In keeping with my recurring theme for returning players, or rather, those interested in returning, this week I’ll be looking into the sleeping giant known as Itemization. The way Guild Wars 2 seemingly inundates players with items, lootboxes, crafting materials, gathering tools, gear and collectibles is borderline sociopathic on the part of ArenaNet. Luckily, we’re going to cover the basic three here in the broadest possible terms, Buy, Sell, Keep, to ease the itemization shock new and returning players may experience upon entering Tyria. advertisement If you are a returning player, the first thing you will be attacked with will be the anniversary rewards, filled with birthday boosters, dye packs, and other helpful items such as leveling scrolls. In truth, most people end up saving these items, but for players that already have max level characters don’t really have much use for experience scrolls. Space management is the name of the … [Read more...] about Returning to Guild Wars 2: That Pesky Itemization
Guild Wars 2 is one of the better MMORPGs out on the market today. With a favorable free to play model that only makes you purchase expansions, players can play the entire base game up until level 80. That’s a lot of content to try the game before you buy it to unlock those pesky F2P restrictions, which itself isn’t all too bad considering alternatives. Therefore, if you’ve chosen to jump into Guild Wars 2, here’s a quick start new player guide for you. 5. Don’t Expect Traditional MMORPG Quests One of the biggest changes players will feel when coming from other MMOs is the questing and PvE experience. As a new player coming out of your starter zone, you’ll obviously want to quest for XP. The thing is, Guild Wars 2 doesn’t offer the traditional questing experience. There isn’t a reliance to go speak to NPCs to ‘pick up’ quests, then return for rewards. In Tyria, there will be Tasks, or Gold Hearts found throughout every map. … [Read more...] about Top 5 Guild Wars 2 New Player Tips 2019 – How To Be Effective In Guild Wars 2
After much consternation, swearing, and the odd reboot it finally happened. I upgraded my PC. I squeezed every penny together I had spare, got new components, prayed to Zommoros that whatever collection of trash I could afford would spit out at least 60FPS, and I started Guild Wars 2. advertisement The result, as you will guess, is a much more complex question than throwing money at a screen and waiting for more power to push past the 60 barrier. MMORPG performance is a multi-faceted issue. It covers various types of technology, distributed computer systems, as well as a multitude of hardware and software layers. So, when one of the community asked what was bottlenecking their game we really had to split the whole question down into several chunks. Going forward I’ll be taking a high-level overview of a number of these technologies, and discussing the systems particular to Guild Wars 2. We might even get some buy-in from ArenaNet on the squirely black magic that … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2 Is Slow…. Is It Time for a New PC?
Just a quick note to say that Guild Wars 2 is free-to-play as of right now! Yep, they turned the switch immediately. :) There are some restrictions, as was to be expected. Those are mostly to discourage spam (in mails, whispers and so on) and to encourage you to buy the game if you like it. That is, if you buy “Heart of Thorns”, your account will be upgraded to a standard account and the expansion will be unlocked. You will not have the chat and mail restrictions anymore then and you will have the regular amount of bag slots as well as 5 character slots just like everybody else. Trying out the free version – as did lots of others, apparently. If you want to give the game a try, you can sign up here. Oh, and welcome to Guild Wars 2! :) … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2: Now Free to Play!
