Spoilers: If you haven’t played Tam Tara Hard Mode. A little over a year ago, I lauded the writers of FFXIV for a series of ongoing events that culminated in a pretty cool Japanese horror story in the game. This is, of course, the story of Edda, a conjurer-turned-necromancer, whom you first meet as a low level adventurer. Her failures as a healer at first seem to echo what you’d normally see in a player party who is struggling to make it through an instance. We all know that feeling of having a bad player in a PUG. But we later discover her failure led to the death of her fiance, who, unlike us blessed by the Mother Crystal, was a real death. He’s dead dead. And she’s carrying his head around in a bag. If that’s not disturbing enough, once you reach level cap, the events of Tam Tara Hard Mode (which I’ve yet to play) continue the twisted story. Apparently Edda’s been busy in her insane struggle to revive her beloved. The demonic powers … [Read more...] about FFXIV: The Japanese Horror Story Continues!

Last night I finished up the fragmented souls grind and picked up Horror Story, which is in fact as Squirrelpope suggested just a rebranding of The Origin Story. However that is perfectly fine with me considering that I really loved that weapon in Year 1. The biggest benefit of this weapon however is that it comes with baked in 600 light level… which had a significant boost in my gearing process. That is something I want to talk about briefly… gearing feels much better. Sure blues and purples by default drop at relatively low light levels like they did before. However there are so many more opportunities to get poweful engrams, in fact it seems like there is the daily ability to get something called a prime engram to drop out in the world while doing other activities or in the crucible. This also drops at a decent boost to your light levels allowing you to slowly ratchet that up in so many more ways than you were able to … [Read more...] about Horror Story
(Editor’s Note: Guild Wars 2 Living Story spoilers ahead) It’s been a while since we last checked in on the Guild Wars 2 living story, and just in time as Episode 4 launches this week. Coming off the heels of Long Live the Lich, Palawa Joko is no longer a threat to the world of Tyria, and the rebuilding can begin in Elona’s plague-ridden areas. Still, the threat of the crystal dragon Kralkatorrik still looms, and conflict with the powerful beast is inevitable. Episode 4 contains new content including: Sun’s Refuge, a personal instance that players will build and upgrade throughout their adventure to unlock new collections, NPCs, lore, and an upgradeable armor set The new Jahai Bluffs map The legendary scepter Xiuquatl A new raid, Mythwright Gambit, in which players will come face to face with the djinn Zommoros Episode 4 is free for players who own Path of Fire. Whether you call them server transitions, evolutions, consolidations, megaservers, or connected realms, server merges are a thing that affects most MMORPGs at some point in their lives — if they are lucky. The really unlucky ones sunset or fade away before a merge can save them. So if you’ve been playing MMOs a while, you’ve probably gone through at least one merge. We’re guessing you have some war stories to tell. So that’s the question I posed to our staff for this week’s Massively Overthinking: What’s the worst server merge situation you’ve ever seen or lived through in an MMO? Brendan Drain (@nyphur): Maybe I’ve been extremely lucky, but I’ve never had a negative server merge experience. The only merge I really recall was in EverQuest II, and the result was just that the ghost town of a server I was on suddenly had people to play with again. To be completely honest, I think sharded server communities are a huge … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: MMO server merge horror stories
