In one of the more intriguing pieces of news coming through the pipeline today is that Riot Games and Marvel Entertainment have teamed up to bring the world League of Legends comics! The first graphic novel will be called League of Legends: Ashe: Warmother and is being prepped for release in May. Ashe is one of the game's original heroes and the story for the graphic novel centers around her life in Freljord. The story is being penned by LoL Senior Narrative Designer Odin Austin Shafer with art being created by Nina Vakueva who has worked on "Heavy Vinyl" in the past. Speaking to TheVerge, Riot's Greg Street said, "We see similarities between the League of Legends Universe and the Marvel Universe as both of them feature an array of characters with compelling and diverse backgrounds." “Fortnite’s peak may be behind us,” SuperData asserts in its report on July 2018’s global video game revenues. “Fortnite revenue is up only 2% from June. Growth was modest despite Epic releasing Season 5 of the game’s battle pass midway through the month.” One the PC side, it looks like Dungeon Fighter Online has surged to boot League of Legends from the top slot since last month (not the first time that’s ever happened, but it’s not common). PUBG dropped quite a bit too, as did Fortnite, but the top 10 is still the top 10, just shuffled around. The same is true of mobile, with only two games swapping places. It’ll be interesting to see whether World of Warcraft has a good showing in next month’s report, which should include the Battle for Azeroth launch. On console, Fortnite remains king, though Grand Theft Auto poked up to #3 with the After Hours update and Overwatch has dropped from the top 10, helped along by … [Read more...] about SuperData July 2018: Fortnite is peaking, League of Legends is bested, Overwatch is slipping
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had some tantalizing rumors and teases that both Riot Games and Blizzard are building something new: Riot’s dangled some questions about maybe making an MMORPG – might it be a League of Legends MMO? – and Blizzard’s outright said it’s returning to the Diablo franchise for multiple projects (one of which is the Switch port announced this morning). Can we hope for an MMO from one of the big studios again – and should we? That’s what we’re pondering in this week’s Massively Overthinking. Do you think either of these companies is actually working on a new MMORPG using an old IP, what might it look like if so, what are they working on if not, and what do you actually want to see happen? Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): On the Diablo side of things, I’m kind of lost. Not just because the franchise does nothing for me, but I can’t imagine multiple games coming from the IP unless … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Would you want to play a League of Legends or Diablo MMORPG?
Dota 2's decline since its peak with the 7.0 update over a year ago. Dota 2 peaked at nearly 14 million monthly active players with the 7.0 update and has since fallen to 10.6m monthly active users. While Dota 2 is by no means a dead game, the trend seen above is definitely a concerning for fans of the game. To help stem the bleeding Valve released Dota 2 plus, which is an optional subscription service which includes a handful of useful tools and new progression. Many fans believe though that Dota 2 plus should have been free as it includes features more useful for new players than veterans. On perhaps an even more interesting note, Superdataresearch released monthly active player figures for 2 other big MOBAs, Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm and Hi-Rez Studio's Smite. Heores of the Storm clocks in at 6.5 million monthly active users and Smite at 2 million. League of Legends, the juggernaut in the genre, has about 100 million monthly active users.
