I think it’s fair to say that EVE Online developer CCP Games hasn’t had much success when it comes to avatar-based gameplay. The studio’s first attempt at a first person shooter with DUST 514 launched to a resounding thud as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, and the expansion that added avatar-based gameplay to EVE itself caused mass in-game riots. Things seemed to be getting back on track about two years ago when CCP showed off a prototype of a new PC-based EVE Online FPS codenamed Project Nova, but now it too seems to be struggling. After launching a live playable demo of Project Nova at EVE Vegas 2018 and opening signups for an impending alpha test, last week CCP indefinitely suspended the project. Having played it at the event, I can’t say that it’s the wrong decision. I found Nova to be a competent first person shooter with some interesting mechanics and satisfying minute-to-minute gameplay, but that’s not enough. It ultimately needs some kind of … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: How could Project Nova live up to its true potential?

If you ever need to know why we’ll happily cover Star Wars Galaxies emulators and not Ultima Online emulators here on Massively Overpowered, the reason is very simple: SWG is dead. UO is not. And that tells you quite a bit about the different sorts of emulation and how fans can approach it, but we’re going to need a few more words to cover all of that. But before we dive wholly into that, let’s talk about Mystery Science Theater 3000. One of the interesting aspects of MST3k fandom is that there has been a sentiment around for ages, frequently put forth by the creators themselves, that fans should keep circulating the tapes of old episodes. Yes, this is for a long-running series that will also happily sell you its two-hour-long episodes in multiple formats and offer others on Netflix or Hulu, along with offering some for free on YouTube. The creators outright encourage fans to just pass along and copy some of the show’s most beloved episodes. … [Read more...] about Vague Patch Notes: MMO emulation as a paean for the dead vs. a mockery of the living

It’s time for fans to pack into the Gurubashi Arena in Hearthstone – Rastakhan’s Rumble is now live for all players. It features 135 new cards and an arsenal of new mechanics. The trolls of Azeroth have gathered at the behest of their leader, King Rastakhan, for a once-per-generation, no-holds-barred throwdown. Nine teams have formed, led by some of the most fearsome fighters of trollkind—nine Legendary Troll Champions, each representing a Hearthstone class. Combatants will enjoy the blessings of their team’s Loa, ancient spirits venerated by the trolls that have manifested themselves as Legendary minions. Players looking to dive deeper into the magic of the trolls can call forth Spirits—unique class-specific minions that share impressive synergies with the Loa. Those more inclined to thrilling the crowd with sheer brutality can do so with Overkill cards—a new gameplay mechanic that rewards players with powerful effects when they deal … [Read more...] about Rastakhan’s Rumble is Now Live in Hearthstone
As an extremely amateur historian — and an extremely attractive archaeologist — I’ve always been fascinated with the “what ifs” of gaming’s timeline. What if Blizzard had pulled the plug on World of Warcraft during development as it did for Warcraft Adventures? What if Hellgate: London had a lot more time and resources before it launched? What if North America had embraced the free-to-play model much earlier instead of the subscription model? What if Massively was shut down by AOL and reborn as Massively Overpowered thanks to a lot of late nights and a crazy Kickstarter campaign? Life would’ve been a lot better. Or worse. That’s the problem with counterfactual history: We can make educated guesses, but we’ll never really know. While it’s sad to see MMOs shut down due to underperformance, it’s especially maddening to contemplate MMOs canceled before they even made it to the starting gate. Today I’m tackling probably … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: True Fantasy Live Online
