This is my frustrated face when it comes to superhero MMO soundtracks. I don’t know what it is, but it seems that none of them can really pull of the epic excitement of superhero movies (or television shows, for that matter). Champions Online and Marvel Heroes were disappointments in the soundtrack department, and even City of Heroes was more on the moody than the miraculous with most of its score. Then we get to DC Universe Online, a game which draws upon the comic book universe that contains such classics like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. And it still manages to put out one of the more unpleasant and dour soundtracks that I’ve ever heard from an MMORPG. Maybe it was trying too hard to be dark and edgy, but DCUO doesn’t have any bona fide classics in its rather extensive OST. So instead of pointing out highlights, we’ll have to settle today for midlights — notable if not excessively great tracks from Daybreak’s multiplatform MMO. 1. SHAZAM! Justice League Dark has landed in DC Universe Online today
It’s time for the anti-heroes to jump to the forefront. Daybreak added Episode 34: Justice League Dark to DC Universe Online. It’s no accident that this update launched a week before the Shazam movie is set to release in theaters because the wizard Shazam appears in this update alongside some of your favorite ethereal masters like Constantine, Zatanna, and Dr. Fate. You’re in luck if you’re a fan of DCUO and haven’t played in a while because all the Justice League Dark content will be available to you for a limited time in what Daybreak is calling a special event version. Look for the “event” versions in your On-Duty tab. There you can find the new Duo called Pub Crawl, the New Alert Darkness Raising, and two new raids, Fellowship of the Arcane and Shattered Gotham. Bear in mind, you need to reach level 10 before participating in the event versions of the new content. When you log in, you might notice the tentacles in the sky above Gotham now, … [Read more...] about SHAZAM! Justice League Dark has landed in DC Universe Online today
Into the Super-verse: Trying DC Universe Online for the first time
While this column will no doubt be looking at the superhero MMO releases that are currently in development, it’s also here, as we said, to look at the past and present titles in this genre. One question that’s been nagging me is why we are so keen to see one of the upcoming titles come out when we already have two games on the market right now. Is it just a desire to see something new? Are City of Heroes fans holding out for a title that mimics their former favorite haunt? Or are the current offerings — DCUO and Champions — not satisfying that caped crusader craving? That’s probably a topic for another day, but this line of thinking nudged me over to check out one of those current superhero MMORPGs for the first time. I’ve never really given DC Universe Online much of a look in the past, but considering this column’s scope, it’s high past time I did. So let me introduce you to Metal Ika, my newfound robot superhero who is bringing lies, … [Read more...] about Into the Super-verse: Trying DC Universe Online for the first time
DC Universe Online Nintendo Switch Port Review
I’m an unabashed fan of superhero games, comics, and movies. Vividly, I recall playing DC Universe Online for the first time during the closed beta, and found myself, for the most part, enjoying the game. I had my qualms with it, but this was before I became a games journalist. Fast forward to 2019, and DC Universe Online is coming to the Nintendo Switch! The Switch is one of my all-time favorite consoles, so I was curious to see what DCUO would bring to it, as the Switch does not have a ton of MMO offerings. However, one of the first things I learned disappointed me: DCUO on the Switch would not feature crossplay. It’s their own server, with only Switch players on it. Not even other consoles would join them on the adventure! So I had to start over from scratch, and none of the stuff I had previously purchased/unlocked on PC would be available to me. DC Universe Online was, at the time of its release pretty revolutionary. They beat Marvel to the punch of a genuine MMO, with … [Read more...] about DC Universe Online Nintendo Switch Port Review
