2018 was an odd year for MMO monetization. Oh sure, we saw Star Citizen offer things like $27,000 ship packages, but obviously most people aren’t buying that – they’re outliers. No, it’s much easier to slip in lockboxes and pricey lifetime subs that’ll fly a bit more under the radar, especially in older games. So now that we’re in 2019 and we’ve got our “best value” games list locked down, maybe we can sort out which MMORPG is actually the most expensive, and which one offers the worst value for your coins. I don’t meant which one has the most expensive stuff; I mean which one is the worst for starting fresh. How much would it really cost you to get reasonably up to speed with the right expansion packs, DLC, or “necessary” cash shop addons like bag slots? Do sub games that charge for expansions too still ask for the most? Or are the “hidden” fees of cash-shop-driven play significantly more burdensome? … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: What’s the most expensive MMO to play at the start of 2019?
Mmos to play
This post is going to seem mostly negative because I want to address specific negatives I have looking at this game. I don't have anything positive to say about the game because I literally have no information about the game. My qualm about backing this game is how the kickstarter is specifically setup. In the Kickstarter itself there are 'goals' that have been reached which have absolutely NO reason to be a goal. They're adding in 'content' based on how much we pay? Is this a poor translation or am I really seeing that our next goal is going to add content in. What is the passion here? Are the devs looking for a cashgrab or am I completely misunderstanding updates on this game? " 110k Euros - Labyrinth " Was there no intention of putting Labyrinth 2 in the game without an additional 20k? Are we customizing the game rather than having dedicated devs that just want to make a good game? (Obviously the devs are going to short answer this and just say " no no no we would never do that, … [Read more...] about I want a new MMO to play and saw a review on this game.
It has become a long-standing tradition as Massively OP and our former site that we like to end the year by creating a list of titles that we anticipate for the coming one. It has always been a devilish list to create, full of loose dates and fast guesswork about which titles will and won’t be releasing during a 12-month window (just read last year’s list to see how spot-on I was). This year we’re changing things up a bit by tossing out the qualifying factor of “will see a hard launch in 2018.” Instead, I drafted up a list of 20 MMOs that have the potential to do or be really interesting next year, whether that be a launch, a long-anticipated beta test, or some other significant development. Plus, hey, you get 20 for the price of 10, so no complaining now! As an aside, this list isn’t going to cover some other exciting-looking multiplayer games that are arriving in 2018, like Anthem, Sea of Thieves, The Crew 2, Monster Hunter … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: 20 upcoming MMOs to watch in 2018
It’s been a while since we last talked to Derek Smart. A year and a half, almost, if you’ve been keeping count. Last time we talked about Quest Online and Alganon, focusing on aspects of free to play and how Quest Online was promoting the game. With the approach of Line of Defense and a few changes over the past year in the free to play market, I thought it was about time to get back in touch. In the interview, we discuss Line of Defense including plans for the game’s monetization, the use of lockboxes in other titles, and some thoughts on the competition for Line of Defense. I always enjoy the opportunity to have a chat with Mr. Smart, he’s one of the few people I can trust to not hold back or filter his answers through a PR machine. You may know Derek Smart from Alganon, Line of Defense, as well as the Battlecruiser line of space simulators. Q. How will Line of Defense balance free to play with a premium model? Players gain Combat Experience Points (CEP) by … [Read more...] about Derek Smart Returns: Free To Play, Line of Defense, Lockboxes
I know what you’re thinking: “Omali, you clearly don’t have a punchline ready for this segment,” and you would be one hundred percent correct, but I have good news. In my continuing efforts to branch MMO Fallout from the normalcy of sarcastic comments, random videos, rants, sales, and “I told you so” moments, I’ve decided to start trying to get interviews with various developers, starting with my first phase: “How Free Can You Be?” I’ll be trying to get interviews with various free to play developers, about their outlook and particular take on the business model. So with fresh taser burns from my daily trash looting at the Bioware offices, I chatted with Derek Smart about Quest Online and Alganon. First off, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy day to talk about Alganon and Quest Online. For those reading this who might not play Alganon, tell us a bit about Alganon and Quest Online and yourself. I have been a … [Read more...] about Derek Smart Talks: Alganon, Free To Play
