Long before Monster Hunter World, Tencent and Capcom partnered up to produce the China-only MMORPG Monster Hunter Online. Now that experiment is coming to an end. Built on the CryEngine, Monster Hunter Online first released into open beta in 2015. The game was poorly supported and the launcher required to play the game came loaded with Chinese malware. Despite these hurdles, Youtube is filled with videos of intrepid Westerners giving the game a try. While all new registrations and payments have already been disabled, the servers will stay up until December 31, 2019. Monster Hunter World is still not available in China, but the closure of Monster Hunter Online may the first hint that Tencent and the Chinese government have settled their disagreements over the game. With ChinaJoy 2019 4 months away, we may get an announcement soon. The official reason given for the closure is that Tencent's license with Capcom has expired, but considering Tencent was the agreed upon publisher of Monster … [Read more...] about Tencent Is Shutting Down Monster Hunter Online

Ever wondered in a direct comparison of Monster Hunter: World vs Dauntless, which game comes out top? The monster hunting genre is now being propelled to the spotlight no small thanks to these two games. And at the moment, both are available for play with Dauntless being in open beta on the PC, while MHW has also released its PC port on Steam. Gameplay Dauntless and MHW share a lot in common – both are about hunting monsters in group. What separates the two games? Dauntless’s combat is a strong point, it has weight and feels good when executing attacks and it’s fast paced. You have combos that can be unleashed using your left and right clicks. Holding down TAB will bring up the cheat sheet for attacks, so be sure to take a look at that. The hunts themselves are good fun. In Ramsgate – the main hub – where players gather to craft and group, you can get new weapons and tier them, before heading out on a hunt. The group hunts are incredibly fun, as the four … [Read more...] about Monster Hunter: World vs Dauntless – Which Is Better?
Hey fellow hunter! Did you also enjoy the Monster Hunter World weekend betas as I did? Wondering if the full version is the same? Well here’s the short answer: Nope! Article finished, time to go back to hunting. Just kidding! While the release version of the game isn’t the same as what you played, it’s still recognizably a Monster Hunter game. We’ll talk more about the online experience once the game’s been released to the masses for awhile, but a few hours in with a review copy of the launch product have answered some questions and concerns that came up during my beta experience. Same old Monster Hunter, new tricks All the cool functions and features you saw in the weekend betas (the slinger, new combos, highly interactive environments, etc.) are intact, but as many of us suspected, the betas were more of a demo. Unlike in the betas, you won’t be given unlimited cash and consumables. You won’t just be queueing up for missions … [Read more...] about Monster Hunter World hands-on: Our first impressions of the PS4 launch

There are times I do things that don’t make sense at all… but am nonetheless compelled to do them anyways. Last night was one of those nights and the madness that my brain was targeting involved seeing if I could actually get Monster Hunter Online installed and running. I had decided that I would end up hanging out with my wife last night and watching some olypmics while she graded, which meant I would be losing access to my beloved Monster Hunter World. I mean sure I could play it through PS Remote Play but the experience degrades so drastically since I am used to playing it on a 4K display in HDR. Early in the evening I had stumbled onto a video by Arekkz from June of 2016 where he attempted playing the game. This for whatever reason triggered something in my brain wanting to try it, much like I will sometimes devote way too much effort to trying to emulate something that I have sitting in my closet. The first problem is that … [Read more...] about Monster Hunter Online
