Hey fellow hunter! Did you also enjoy the Monster Hunter World weekend betas as I did? Wondering if the full version is the same? Well here’s the short answer: Nope! Article finished, time to go back to hunting. Just kidding! While the release version of the game isn’t the same as what you played, it’s still recognizably a Monster Hunter game. We’ll talk more about the online experience once the game’s been released to the masses for awhile, but a few hours in with a review copy of the launch product have answered some questions and concerns that came up during my beta experience. Same old Monster Hunter, new tricks All the cool functions and features you saw in the weekend betas (the slinger, new combos, highly interactive environments, etc.) are intact, but as many of us suspected, the betas were more of a demo. Unlike in the betas, you won’t be given unlimited cash and consumables. You won’t just be queueing up for missions … [Read more...] about Monster Hunter World hands-on: Our first impressions of the PS4 launch

Taking a tour of the global Monster Hunter World community on PS4
While I’m not nearly the hardcore veteran our illustrious hunter Matt Daniel is, I can at least admit to physically living among the Japanese hunting community. While we both can speak a bit of Japanese, I enjoyed a solid chunk of time playing Monster Hunter 4 face-to-face with Japanese players, plus a smidge of some other MH games being demoed at Japanese game conventions. International communities are certainly different, but what western players (and especially those watching from the sidelines) may not realize is how different the series is in Japan, as it’s largely a portable title that can be played anywhere. Japan’s console market is vastly different and the PC gaming scene is probably as niche as our VR scene. Monster Hunter World’s Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC announcement was huge since it sent the message that this would be a title aimed at western players, who enjoy the series but not nearly at the same levels as … [Read more...] about Taking a tour of the global Monster Hunter World community on PS4
Hands-on with Monster Hunter World on PC: ‘A quick and dirty port’
So you’ve probably heard some news about the Monster Hunter World port. PC performance issues, keyboard and mouse issues, random crashing. I wish I could tell you differently, but I can’t. No joke, MHW is one of those games I really wanted to see do well on PC and wanted to tell you all to go out and buy. I still argue the series is MMO action raiding boiled down into a tight, fun, formula filled with the treasure hunting you like and less of the downtime and dice rolls you hate, without so much of the synchronized combat dancing we see in the genre, but I have some serious reservations about this port. Granted, Capcom has already made improvements during the media testing phase I participated in. It seems like the bug that caused the game to hard crash has been fixed in single player experiences, but the game’s somehow carried over some console oddities, and as PC media doesn’t seem as hyped as the console media was (I never found … [Read more...] about Hands-on with Monster Hunter World on PC: ‘A quick and dirty port’
Monster Hunter World: 8.3M sold, PC performance drag, and Steam data
Capcom has reason to cheer: Monster Hunter World crushed it on PS4. The Japanese publisher’s latest revenue report shows that the game sold 8.3 million copies since its launch earlier this year, with the PC launch yet to come next week. The company’s total revenue for the April, May, and June quarter was ¥17.2 billion ($155 million US) – a 46% increase over last year’s haul. In other Monster Hunter World news, reviews are sending up warning signals about the serious performance drag the game is suffering even on some high-end rigs. Capcom’s William Yagi-Bacon told ResetEra that’s because the client is loading the entire active level into memory when you’re playing. “In addition to managing assets loaded into memory, it keeps track of monster interactions, health status, environment/object changes, manages LOD & object culling, calculates collision detection and physics simulation, and tons of other background telemetry stuff that … [Read more...] about Monster Hunter World: 8.3M sold, PC performance drag, and Steam data

Oh right, Monster Hunter World hasn’t launched on PC yet. But that’s changing soon, as Capcom just announced it’s coming not in fall, but earlier than expected, on August 9th. Well, that never happens! We’ll take it! “The title that released for consoles earlier this year has since gone on to become Capcom’s best-selling game in company history with over 8 million units shipped globally. In this entry, players take on larger than life monsters in a variety of vast, living, breathing ecosystems either solo or with up to three other hunters via online co-op, complete with drop-in functionality, a first for the series.” You betcha there’s a new trailer, and if you’ve forgotten what the game’s all about, we’ve got you covered there too, as we did some extensive guides and impressions pieces on the game when it hit PS4 earlier this year!
