Concraft by ConceptDesign Check out Part 2: A Parent’s Guide Check out Part 3: Gallery You often hear about MMOs being referred as “another world,” or “another life,” or even a “second life.” We’ve referred to games as virtual themeparks, virtual sandboxes, and any hybrid of the two. It isn’t often, however, that we hear a game referred to as a “virtual toy box,” and those three words sum up Roblox with incredible accuracy. Odds are you’ve heard of , perhaps even played it at one point, and if you are in the game’s demographic, you may be playing it right now. After all, Roblox is ranked #1 in the US for total engagement time. Survive disasters with full physics Roblox is a game where players can mould their own worlds and games and then allow others to play in their creations. At one moment you can be playing a game of paintball (above) and the next, Spongebob could be chasing you through Bikini Bottom, … [Read more...] about Roblox Part 1: Opening The Toy Chest
Hi guys. As some of you surely have noticed, we had some drama going on this morning on our forums. If you want to spare yourself of the suffering of having to read those 3 pages, I can tell you that, in brief, some user accused someone else of having created several multi accounts to "cheat" The Foundation. I was entangled in a very long planning meeting for Alpha 1, hence I couldn't intervene immediately. Now, instead of preparing the next Kickstarter update, I'm forced to write down this thread. It means that instead of spending my time making the nice 99% of the community happy, I have to waste it calming down the kindergarten-minded 1%. And I'm not happy about it. So, let's tackle the issue step by step. Reporting If you want to report someone for any kind of rule-breaking behavior, you shall do so privately to a member of the staff. It can be via forum pm, Discord, email, whatever. But private. Opening a thread of the forums, destined to descend into a flame war, serves no … [Read more...] about Two Words On Reporting, Leaderboards & Pre-Alpha. I’m tired.
At this afternoon’s EA Play, EA and BioWare have revealed Anthem’s brand-new trailer. The game is now slated to launch on February 22nd, 2019. During the developer discussion, BioWare said it recognized the problems inherent in storytelling in a multiplayer shared world (reiterating Casey Hudson’s dev blog from not that long ago), but it thinks it’s found a way to reconcile driving the story without sacrificing multiplayer gameplay. Characters will play as “freelancers” piloting Javelin exosuits, trying to survive in a hostile environment, and fighting the bad guys trying to exploit the power. There are four Javelins, each with a different way to play the game: Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, Storm. “You are not your suit,” BioWare cautions; you can flip between them depending on the gameplay you want to take part in from moment to moment. Customization and personalization of weapons – paint jobs and suit geometry changes – are … [Read more...] about E3 2018: BioWare’s Anthem has soloable co-op open world, no lockboxes, a sweet trailer, and a February 22 launch
It’s certainly a daunting task to launch a game into its open beta, but the developers of Dauntless are undaunted as the title does just that this week. Now everyone can daunt gigantic monsters, daunting the local townsfolk into upgrading gear while forging names like “Daunter of Behemoths.” Without paying a dime! In other news, I’ve now been forbidden from using the word “daunt” any further in this particular post. Also, there’s other beta news worth covering. As a child, you were likely told that if at first you don’t succeed, you should try again. That is the lesson that appears to be going into Wild Busters rebranding and changing ownership to a new company that has not been kicked off of Steam. It’s technically trying again, yes, but it feels like it skipped a step or two. H1Z1 launched its open beta on PlayStation 4, and… wow, it managed to get a lot of players in short order, huh? That 200,000 concurrent players is an … [Read more...] about Betawatch: Dauntless strides into open beta (May 25, 2018)
Worlds Adrift has been one of those games I’ve been closely watching but trying not to jump into until it was ready. I tried one of the alpha weekends, and while it was playable, I could tell I needed to wait, and wait I did. I had faith that once the game would hit Steam (“early access” shield be damned if you ask for cash to play your game), it’d be something that’d move me. In fact, I called it out by name when discussing possible future MMOs that could tackle griefing with a moral system. Today, I’m here to eat my hat, good sirs and madams. While Improbable has been trying to “save MMOs” with SpatialOS, this being the first big MMO that uses it doesn’t wholly impress me. Some things work well, and yes, there are some good ideas, but as a PvP fan, I think there are some glaring mistakes that are going to send a lot of MMORPG players heading for the hills. Let’s dig in. What in the Worlds is right I want to start out … [Read more...] about First impressions of Worlds Adrift: Innovation, Zelda, open-world PvP, and that sinking feeling
