It’s been a good third quarter for publisher Take-Two, which posted $1.57 billion in net bookings, $1.248 billion in revenue, and $350 million in gross profit. The success is thanks in no small part to stellar sales of its rootin’-tootin’ outlaw-shootin’ sandbox Red Dead Redemption 2, which has sold a staggering 23 million copies since its October release, vastly exceeding the company’s expectations. On top of shipping more copies in its first 15 days than the original Red Dead did in eight years, the title also had “the highest opening weekend of any title in entertainment history of any sort,” according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. The game’s multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, has also been performing remarkably well, “trending ahead of how GTA Online was performing by the same point in its lifecycle.” The success of RDO also probably has something to do with the company’s “significant growth in … [Read more...] about Red Dead Redemption 2 leads the charge in Take-Two’s unexpectedly successful third quarter

Strange lawsuits aren’t exactly uncommon within the gaming industry, but this one might just be the weirdest so far — this year, at any rate: It turns out that Take-Two, publisher of Rockstar Games’s wild-west sandbox Red Dead Redemption 2, is being taken to court by none other than the Pinkertons. The so-called detective agency and private security firm — notorious for its less-than-savory activities in bounty hunting, strikebreaking, and union busting throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries — you may be surprised to discover, is still around, though it’s now owned by Swedish company Securitas AB, and it recently sent a cease-and-desist to Take-Two “asking for either a single payment or a royalty arrangement for Red Dead 2’s use of the term ‘Pinkerton’ throughout its story.” The Pinkertons play a not-insignificant part in RDR2’s storyline, as — mild spoiler alert — the protagonist and his … [Read more...] about The Pinkertons are taking Take-Two to court over Red Dead Redemption 2
If the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 (and as of this week, Red Dead Online) has you wanting a little more wild west in your wardrobe, then boy are you in luck: Rockstar Games has partnered with trendy New York fashion label Barking Irons to create a line of clothes and accessories inspired by the game’s frontier setting. Now you, too, can serve up grizzled outlaw realness with a replica of Arthur Morgan’s own gunslinger jacket or an array of old-west-inspired shirts. There is also a selection of matching bags available for some dapper accessorizing, and we can pretty confidently guarantee that they’ll actually be made from the advertised material. You may, however, need to pull a bank heist or two before getting your hands on this RDR-inspired fashion because it doesn’t come cheap. The aforementioned gunslinger jacket will run you $250 US, and the shirts range from $92 to $150. And if you’ve got your eye on the snazzy riding duffel bag, be prepared to … [Read more...] about Rockstar partners with fashion label for Red Dead Redemption 2-inspired fashion line
I have to wonder whether Bethsoft is having some regrets right now. It seems to me that Fallout 76’s beta is being completely overshadowed by the release of Red Dead Redemption. Part of that is probably because the beta is a truncated, discrete ordeal, with windows for testing rather than an always-up scenario (and the PC launch was a bit of a mess). But it’s not really just a test; the game is still supposed to launch on November 14th, and everything players do during these tests carries over into live. It’s more like an early access or even a headstart. And yet all anyone’s talking about is their red deads. I’m not even sure that will be alleviated much in November, either, given that Red Dead Online is supposed to kick off then too, giving Fallout 76 even more competition. If it weren’t Bethsoft, I’d suspect they’d postpone the launch. In fact, when I first started reading the letter to fans ahead of the beta last week, something about … [Read more...] about Leaderboard: Are you playing Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption 2, or neither?
Considering that Wild West Online is a wild dud these days, players looking for multiplayer western action are turning their eyes to Red Dead Redemption 2. The game is coming out for consoles on October 26th, but Rockstar Games continues to be cagey as to whether or not the open-world title will make an appearance (as is rumored) on PC. One thing we do know a bit more about the game this week is how it will look and play, thanks to a six-minute gameplay video that highlights the various activities and features that this highly anticipated sequel will contain. Polygon says it’s impossible for the studio to give a real feel for the Red Dead Redemption experience in a series of quick video clips, so take this with a grain of salt. Rockstar did confirm that it will be supporting the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro with this fall release, in case you have the best console hardware the market has to offer.
