July 26 will mark the Early Access launch of Warlords Awakening on Steam. The Korean fantasy MMORPG has a generic theme to it, but the action combat may tempt Diablo 3 or Path of Exile players to give it a shot between seasons. At least that's what publisher PLAYWITH Inc is banking on. But first, a bit of history. Originally known as ELOA (Elite Lord of Alliance), or Inspirit Online to those who played on an unlicensed server, Warlords Awakening was previously published in the West by Webzen. That server was shut down in 2016, but the game is now making a comeback via steam. Playwith purchased the IP from the original developer NPICSoft and relaunched the MMORPG in Korea late last year. But just two weeks ago, on July 11, Playwith announced the closure of the official Korean service. Despite the decision of the developer/publisher to shut the game in their home market, the Steam Early Access launch is still set for July 26. The base, and cheapest, package to access the game on that … [Read more...] about The Weekly Raid: Warlords Awakening, Another Korean Cash Grab?

Ending Hibernation I had to vary up my morning routine today, as today is the first day back after snowmageddon. Until yesterday afternoon we had not left the house since Thursday evening. Mostly we got out yesterday just to see how the main roads were. If we based things on our neighborhood we would think the world was still under a solid sheet of ice. However as we got out and about we saw that the majority of the major roads were well travelled. That is not to say that I did not drive slightly under the speed limit on the way in, and not to say that I still did not slip and slide quite a bit. However I made it into the office without issue. It is funny how quiet the office is. I expected to see more people here, however it is just me and one of the server techs. The irony is that while we are both in the office, we have been chatting over our in office instant messenger rather than face to face. I guess that is a sign of our … [Read more...] about A Tale of Two Raids
It’s a bit odd to say this about a Pokemon game, but raiding in Pokemon Go is kind of a big deal. Multiplayer has always been a core part of the series, but it’s mostly been PvP. Niantic’s design choices aren’t always on point, but since its first reveal, I knew it was something that would change the nature of the game, and it certainly did. I’d argue that the introduction of raiding, something I normally dislike in MMOs, is what really helped solidify POGO as at least an MMO-esque game. But as in your typical MMO, raiding is drastically different from what you do 90% of the time in game. The new quests/tutorials kind of help with this, but there are some very basic issues that even people in my raid group still ignore. While having strong allies is part of the reason for this, numbers can help offset this as well. But if you’re reading this guide, you probably need to help your local scene out, or at least want to tackle … [Read more...] about Massively on the Go: Our guide to legendary and EX raiding in Pokemon Go
Tonight is yet another Duranub raid night… something that I both look forward to and dread at the same time. There is one aspect of being a raid leader that I will never get used to; the raid invite. In lean times I hate trying to magically pull a workable raid group out of my ass, and in good times I hate trying to decide who is going to make the cut and who is going to have to twiddle their thumbs that evening. No matter what decisions myself and the other officers make, it is always at great personal cost to my digestive tract. Lately it’s come to my attention that many of the players who are late to the party simply think that I in some way do not like them, and that is the reason why they are not receiving regular invites. While this came out in part on the empyreal forums this morning, I thought I would take some time to type up a post on my blog about it. Maybe as a way to explain the thought process that goes into invites and some of … [Read more...] about The Dark Art of the Raid Invite
Massively OP reader Sorrior recently sent in a question about raiding, a topic we haven’t discussed in a while. “I have noticed raiding tends to lead to more homogenization even without PvP and a bigger focus on numbers when making classes as opposed to their feel and style. I also see a correlation with a bigger emphasis on raiding and the decline of community quality. On a personal level, I feel like raiding should be about the joy of taking on foes you cannot defeat alone with allies/friends, but I feel many treat it as a chore or just see the numbers nowadays. Or they are just after the gear, which also seems to bring in a lot of people who focus on the numbers rather than the experience. I thought talking about why we raid and what we enjoy about it as MMO players while discussing ways to preserve the feeling of community might be fun.” I think talking about that would also be fun, which is precisely why we Overthink it in this column. So let’s do it: This … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: The state of modern MMORPG raiding
