Destiny 2 – Proving Comebacks are Possible

November 10, 2017 by mmorpg Leave a Comment

In the last few months we have heard all manner of game news. Fortnite was said to be falling off, if by losing a few million players out of their hundred million plus population, well, okay. Call of Duty launched their battle royale and is doing well. Diablo is on the Switch, and there is this little western game out there sweeping up all the headlines. Red Dead Redemption 2 is amazing. However, in all this news, Destiny 2 continues to prove its value with a hugely successful expansion called Forsaken.  advertisement  In recent data reports Forsaken has done well for Activision. Players are logging back into the game and the console market is proving that an MMO can exist in that space and maintain its staying power. Destiny one was a solid launch and a great mix of online elements with a shooter RPG. With Destiny 2 many players felt much of the same, but joined onto the ride and began to play in the new story. Now with Forsaken the game is showing its consistency with … [Read more...] about Destiny 2 – Proving Comebacks are Possible

Rockstar boasts of 100-hour work weeks on Red Dead Redemption 2

October 15, 2018 by massivelyop Leave a Comment

If you’re looking forward to Red Dead Redemption 2, we can hardly blame you as it seems like half of the civilized world is looking forward to it at this point. But when you hear the people in charge of Rockstar boasting that the game has led to 100-hour workweeks for several employees in 2018, that may… dampen your enthusiasm somewhat. (For those of you who don’t feel like doing the math, that translates to almost 15-hour workdays every day… or 20-hour workdays and recovering sleep on the weekends.) So… yay, video games? It seems almost inconceivable that someone would brag about that, but perhaps it was just an outgrowth of the developers talking up some rather impressive stats around the game, like how the game sports over 300,000 animations and over 500,000 lines of dialogue voiced in the game. There’s also planning to make sure that the game’s online mode is every bit as robust as Grand Theft Auto Online, which… doesn’t really … [Read more...] about Rockstar boasts of 100-hour work weeks on Red Dead Redemption 2

MMO Week in Review: Bless, Daybreak, Conan Exiles, and Wild West Online (Mar 13, 2018)

Support Massively OP on PatreonWere you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review! Gotta love those weeks when there are so many huge stories I can’t decide what to feature here and just feature them all! Conan Exiles launched this week, with lots of praise – except for Funcom’s disastrous handling of PvE-conflict servers. Bless Online shocked its community by springing optional subscriptions just a few weeks ahead of launch and not exactly dazzling press previewers. Wild West Online blundered onward into its ill-advised formal launch from early access, in spite of criticism over its incomplete state (and lack of female toons). And just to cap it all off, the Daybreak/Columbus Nova/Renova mess took a bizarre turn into the tawdriest corners of political intrigue. What a week! I need a drink. MMO Week in Review: Star Trek Online is going free-to-play, again (May 6, 2018)

Support Massively OP on PatreonWere you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review! There are hardly any proper MMORPGs that haven’t already seen at least one major business model shift over the years, and this week Star Trek Online announced its second: It’s going even more free-to-play, or maybe more buy-to-play, depending on how you look at it, as it’s trading its optional subscription away for an optional flat-fee buy-in. Meanwhile, we’re looking ahead to Guild Wars 2’s underwater update, watching players quibble over Elder Scrolls Online’s and Star Citizen’s business models, debating the state of modern MMO raiding, genuinely enjoying SWTOR’s latest update, being surprised that WoW’s doing so well, and mourning the impending loss of two PWE MMORPGs. Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions. THIS … [Read more...] about MMO Week in Review: Star Trek Online is going free-to-play, again (May 6, 2018)

Perfect Ten: 20 upcoming MMOs to watch in 2018

December 13, 2017 by massivelyop Leave a Comment

It has become a long-standing tradition as Massively OP and our former site that we like to end the year by creating a list of titles that we anticipate for the coming one. It has always been a devilish list to create, full of loose dates and fast guesswork about which titles will and won’t be releasing during a 12-month window (just read last year’s list to see how spot-on I was). This year we’re changing things up a bit by tossing out the qualifying factor of “will see a hard launch in 2018.” Instead, I drafted up a list of 20 MMOs that have the potential to do or be really interesting next year, whether that be a launch, a long-anticipated beta test, or some other significant development. Plus, hey, you get 20 for the price of 10, so no complaining now! As an aside, this list isn’t going to cover some other exciting-looking multiplayer games that are arriving in 2018, like Anthem, Sea of Thieves, The Crew 2, Monster Hunter … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: 20 upcoming MMOs to watch in 2018
