I have been buried in Star Wars: The Old Republic lore for about 8 years now, and it pains me to admit this, but I think I was wrong about the motivation of the primary antagonist. I blame part of that on myself because I didn’t put the pieces of the puzzle together, but at the same time, part of the blame falls to BioWare because the storytellers didn’t see it as a compelling story or spread the pieces out over time in favor of telling stories that were faster and more compelling. From my perspective, we were distracted by the points of views of other characters. Revan and Marr both had a very strong opinion of Vitiate. Senya had an interesting perspective since she was married and had children with the man. Scourge and the Hand had their own perspective, too, but it wasn’t until I watched a video by DuduFilm did it all come together for me. Although Vitiate has a long backstory that builds him as a powerful being wanted to gain power at any cost, he actually suffers … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: We have the Star Wars The Old Republic story all wrong

Flameseeker Chronicles: Deep-diving Guild Wars 2’s A Star to Guide Us, part one
Season 4 of Guild Wars 2 Living World has been a solid addition to the episodic narrative that drives the game’s content development in between expansions, and I am in no way exaggerating when I say this episode has been the best to date. ArenaNet’s focus on delivering a more believable story with superior delivery is paying off: A Star to Guide Us is making a ripple in the tide of Living World naysayers and it has set us up for more impactful story arcs to come. The episode pulls at our heartstrings without slacking on the humour factor and the developments will have seasoned players and newbies alike gasping, laughing, and crying. In this edition of Flameseeker Chronicles, I’ll discuss the main plot points of the first three chapters of this episode and will share my highlights with you. Make My MMO: SOTA sees layoffs, Crowfall sees delay, Star Citizen sees shade, and Camelot Unchained sees beta on the horizon (June 23, 2018)
This week in MMO crowdfunding, Camelot Unchained is in the home stretch before open beta. Yes, really, open beta. This is happening, people! Clear your 4th of July! As for live Kickstarters, TemTem is up to $320K and counting, far past its original goal with still a week left to go. Most recently, donors unlocked Nintendo Switch play and the replay system. Clubs (guilds) are set to unlock at $400K. And yes, the game is now registered on Steam. The Flower of Knighthood, on the other hand, abandoned its Kickstarter in its final hours, seeing it would not complete. The devs haven’t commented on their next move just yet. Meanwhile, Shroud of the Avatar was hit with layoffs, EVE Online got its revenge on Star Citizen, Chronicles of Elyria posted lore, Albion Online rolled out a small update, and Crowfall admitted it’s delaying soft launch into 2019 but showed off its procedural world generation. Finally, Fractured prepped for Kickstarter – get ready to … [Read more...] about Make My MMO: SOTA sees layoffs, Crowfall sees delay, Star Citizen sees shade, and Camelot Unchained sees beta on the horizon (June 23, 2018)
EA’s Star Wars “Open-World” Game
5 As usual in the industry, speculation over a job posting has driven the rumor mill into full production. There’s a lot of chatter about the latest job listing from EA for work on a Star Wars “Open-World” Game. I recall there being another listing for a similar game around 2013, though I’m not sure anything ever came of that. The “open-world” component of the posting is most interesting. The fact that EA is making a Star Wars game isn’t news since they’re the only ones with the rights. What does “open-world” mean? I think that’s about as broad these days as saying something like “Multiplayer” or heck, even “star wars game”. MMORPG? Doubtful. Completely. Battle Royale or Survival or other type of game? Most likely. I’ve said and will maintain that no blunder — Battlefront 2 or otherwise — will be enough to dissuade people from hyping a Star Wars BR or Survival game. It’s … [Read more...] about EA’s Star Wars “Open-World” Game
