It’s here! It’s here! Path of Exile has officially launched its Synthesis expansion for both PC and Xbox One. Still wondering about that PlayStation 4 launch? It’s on track for later this month, and the game’s first con, ExileCon, is slated for November, both of which ought to help 2019 be the “biggest year in Path of Exile history” as Grinding Gear intends. “In Path of Exile: Synthesis, players will meet Cavas and help him recover his lost memories by fighting their way through them. Chaining these memories together will provide valuable rewards, new crafting opportunities, and deadly boss fights. Path of Exile: Synthesis also introduces two new spellcasting archetypes to the game, the Holy and Chaos casters, along with a host of new spells such as Divine Ire, Purifying Flame, Wave of Conviction and Soulrend.” Do note that GGG’s acknowledged that there’s a bit of a weird bug right now, but it’s possible to click on past … [Read more...] about Path of Exile’s Synthesis expansion is officially live

MMO Week in Review: Bless, Daybreak, Conan Exiles, and Wild West Online (Mar 13, 2018)
Support Massively OP on PatreonWere you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review! Gotta love those weeks when there are so many huge stories I can’t decide what to feature here and just feature them all! Conan Exiles launched this week, with lots of praise – except for Funcom’s disastrous handling of PvE-conflict servers. Bless Online shocked its community by springing optional subscriptions just a few weeks ahead of launch and not exactly dazzling press previewers. Wild West Online blundered onward into its ill-advised formal launch from early access, in spite of criticism over its incomplete state (and lack of female toons). And just to cap it all off, the Daybreak/Columbus Nova/Renova mess took a bizarre turn into the tawdriest corners of political intrigue. What a week! I need a drink. MMO Week in Review: PAX West caps off a summer of gaming (September 2, 2018)
Support Massively OP on PatreonWere you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review! Ug, I would be so happy if Gamescom and PAX West didn’t happen a week apart and PAX West and DragonCon didn’t overlap! Not only do we get an avalanche of news from incoming major games, but it can be a quiet period for other studios that don’t want their news buried. Such was not quite the case this week, however, as we got plenty of goodies on new games like Anthem and New World as well as from existing MMOs like Elder Scrolls Online and World of Warcraft. Guild Wars 2 even booted up a boba tea promo, and Star Citizen rolled out fresh drama. Stay tuned for in-depth coverage of PAX this week once Larry and MJ are back from PAX and DragonCon! Massively Overthinking: Being Uncle Owen in MMORPGs
Ever since the tone-deaf SOE proclamation that nobody wanted to play Uncle Owen in an MMORPG, contrary me has consciously fought that very stupid idea. A whole lot of people wanted to play Uncle Owen, then and now, there and elsewhere. Star Wars Galaxies was a game half full of Uncle Owens. I spent a lot of time literally becoming a moisture farmer as my own form of rebellion. And yet, as I realized while debating with my husband a few weeks ago, the person I really wanted to be was freakin’ Lando. And most MMORPGs don’t allow that either — it’s Luke or GTFO. Such is the argument made by a recent PC Gamer article, which in its own precious mainstream way argues that “MMOs need to let you be an average Joe” to get out of the clear “creative slump” they’re in. “With their scale and permanence, MMOs give us the chance to be citizens in a make-believe world we create with the help of our fellow players. When it’s … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Being Uncle Owen in MMORPGs
MMO Week in Review: World of Warcraft’s bribes are just too good
World of Warcraft pulled out all the stops this week, announcing stuff you might have thought would be saved for BlizzCon, including the Tides of Vengeance patch, complete with raids, new story content, and quality-of-life fixes. Of course, it also slipped in a massive bribe for those who agree to stay subbed, so there was that too. Plus, Guild Wars 2 released the (rather well-received) S4E4, A Star To Guide Us, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is getting that teased online mode, Red Dead Online.
