The esports juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down as this flourishing sector is poised to smash through the $1 billion barrier this year. Games like CS:GO, Dota 2, League of Legends and Overwatch have enjoyed a tremendous boost as a result of the phenomenon that is competitive gaming. It has turned gamers into multimillionaires and attracted all manner of commercial tie-ups, so developers are desperate to break into the esports scene. First person shooters like CS:GO and Call of Duty are thriving too, with teams like Astralis becoming rich and famous as a result of their successes over the past year. Now Fortnite, which became the most popular game in the world in 2018, is bidding to muscle in. The battle royale … [Read more...] about Will MMO Games Have a Greater Influence on Esports Going Forward?

Hey, Diablo III. Happy Switch launch day. Happy Diablo Immortal day! (So much for that animated series rumor?) As announced during the BlizzCon opening ceremony, the Diablo franchise is getting a new entry – a “full-fledged action RPG you can play everywhere with everyone.” Yes, it’s a mobile game, it’s being built by Blizzard and NetEase, and the demo is playable right now at BlizzCon. Worth noting is that the press release calls it a “mobile massively multiplayer online action–role-playing game.” It is NOT coming to PC, but Blizzard says it’s a “true Diablo experience,” not an April Fool’s joke (the crowd cheered when the player asked this). They’re not sure there will be a “hardcore” mode. “Six iconic and highly customizable Diablo character classes will be available in Diablo Immortal—Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Necromancer, and Wizard—each with new powers … [Read more...] about BlizzCon 2018: Diablo Immortal is a ‘mobile massively multiplayer online action–role-playing game’

Multiplayer has steadily become the rule, as opposed the exception, when it comes to modern gaming. In our super-connected age, solo experiences alone simply don’t offer enough to keep players interested. There’s no question that adding real people to the fray offers a degree of chaos that can’t be replicated by AI and helps to make games more exciting. But MMOs have come a long way from their usual haunts in role-playing games and can now be found in a wide variety of genres that includes shooters and beyond. One of the best examples of this multiplayer mayhem can be found in Bungie’s MMO, shared-world shooter, Destiny. When Destiny was released in 2014, it was an ambitious title unlike anything anyone had ever seen. Featuring jaw-dropping graphics and first-person shooter gameplay on top of a massively multiplayer world, this was a far cry from World of Warcraft. While the game definitely had some wrinkles to iron out in the beginning, the developers have done … [Read more...] about Keeping Fans Happy is Crucial for Multiplayer Games
