People Make Games We have this modern tendency to think of the people that make the things we use as nameless faceless corporations. So we think of Electronic Arts for example as this evil company that is trying to fleece us for our money and give his horrible games in return. When in truth Electronic Arts is an assemblage of hundreds of really hard working and well meaning people who just want to make something awesome. They grew up on the same dreams we all did, wanting to make video games for a living… and unlike most of us they held onto those dreams and chased them rather than accepting something else for their fate. The people that make video games are my equivalent of a professional athlete, they are the people that fought hard enough to achieve the goal of creating that thing they love so much… for a living. So having known developers in all forms over the years, and listening to them talk about what they are trying to do… … [Read more...] about Hip to be Mean

My thanks to Lola who brought this news of a new thing called GameCrush.com to my attention. This website, which launched yesterday, supposedly offers a social service where gamer boys can pay to have girls play video games and chat/webcam with them. The girls in turn get paid to be the “PlayDates” in Xbox 360 titles like Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3, etc. and PC-based casual games. … [Read more...] about You’re Such a Boob…I Mean, Noob
It’s not even a term being used solely from the outside; I know lots of people who happily label themselves as casuals, even players who spend more time playing MMOs than I do. One of my friends in Final Fantasy XIV referred to herself as a casual because she has no interest in raiding and high-end progression, despite the fact that she’s an intensely driven crafter who literally runs up against the maximum quantities of gil allowed in the game. She’s more hardcore than I am in that arena! … [Read more...] about Vague Patch Notes: Casual no longer means anything in MMOs
Avid EVE Online player and real-life corporate executive Dunk Dinkle gave his thoughts on the sale in an insightful blog post, reaching the similar conclusion that the sale was likely the result of EVE‘s financial backers wanting their money out of the studio on good terms. He believes that CCP’s gamble on VR was a last ditch attempt to grow big enough to buy out the investors, and failing that, the only exit strategy left for investors was selling to a new owner. We can also pretty confidently predict that this deal has been in the works at least as far back as April because Pearl Abyss CEO Robin Jung reported that he was in attendance at EVE Fanfest 2018. … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: What could the sale of CCP Games mean for EVE Online?
Copyright is rather intentionally vague and reliant on judgement calls. Despite what a lot of people like to claim, there is no “change X number of things” or “change X% of the work” that will avoid copyright infringement. Neither does fair use work as a be-all catch-all to avoid copyright infringement. You can claim that the copyright infringements in question are covered under fair use, but you still have to prove that you are acting according to the principles of fair use (which doesn’t cover nearly as much as you might think it does). … [Read more...] about Trademarks, copyrights, and patents: What they mean for you and for video games
