Massively Overthinking: Alone together vs. forced grouping in MMORPGs
I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that everyone has at some point seen the xkcd called Isolation, but if not, there it is. No matter what the age and era, someone’s always preaching that people were more sociable in the long long ago. In this comic, however, Randall Munroe isn’t even contesting that. His point is basically no duh and so what. Yes, we become less sociable with random people in our immediate vicinity as we gain more and more access to ideas, entertainment, and people not in our immediate vicinity thanks to technology. Ultimately, replacing impromptu stranger interaction with the amusements of our choice appears to be what a lot of people wanted all along. MMORPG players surely see where I’m going with this because we have the same eternal struggle when it comes to in-game socializing, grouping, community, and stickiness, the tug-of-war between the people who want to play alone together and the people who think that … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Alone together vs. forced grouping in MMORPGs
Trademarks, copyrights, and patents: What they mean for you and for video games
Has the pace of news moved so quickly that we’ve already forgotten about Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene’s statement that video games lack any IP copyright protection? Because that was really ridiculous. Especially since what he was referring to was not actually even remotely related to copyright, but covered something that would be handled via patent. And even that wouldn’t have worked! Of course, you can’t really blame him. By which I mean you can totally blame him, but it’s a common misconception that turns up time and again. People talk about copyright, trademark, and patent issues in the same general melange of “this company owns this,” and the thing is that they’re related terms and concepts that nevertheless mean very, very different things. If it needs to be pointed out, I am not a lawyer and definitely not an attorney working in this particular field, which is complex, multifaceted, and the sort of law that employs … [Read more...] about Trademarks, copyrights, and patents: What they mean for you and for video games
“My Ally Is The Force, And A Powerful Ally It Is”
Every Friday I look forward to seeing what new updates the Bioware crew will have for us on Star Wars: The Old Republic. Among my favorite kinds of updates are the Developer Dispatch videos or the Developer Diary blogs. Like everyone else, I’m hungering for more on game content like species, combat or mechanics too, but I think delving into the minds of the devs can indirectly reveal information that is no less valuable. You get answers to questions about what goes into creating a game like SWTOR. How does one go about making something feel “Star Wars-y”? Who’s their audience? And a question that I’m also personally interested in — how’s their progress? The video “Designing the Light Side” released today pretty much embodies everything I love about these Developer Dispatches. Even though I myself have very little interest in playing the Jedi classes, this update was something I had been waiting for for a long time, ever since its … [Read more...] about “My Ally Is The Force, And A Powerful Ally It Is”
EVE Evolved: What could the sale of CCP Games mean for EVE Online?
Play EVE Online for freeJust a few days ago, we awoke to news so unexpected that it made me check I hadn’t time-traveled to April 1st: EVE Online developer CCP Games is being bought by Black Desert Online studio Pearl Abyss for a total of $425 million USD. The news immediately kicked the EVE Online community into a frenzy, with most people’s gut reactions being overwhelmingly negative. Black Desert is known for its aggressive monetisation strategies and many EVE Online players were understandably worried that Pearl Abyss would try to force the same strategy onto EVE. CCP Games and Pearl Abyss have obviously been very positive about the buyout, with both companies issuing statements about the exciting new opportunities they see in working together. CCP has also been pretty quick to get a handle on the community discussion surrounding the deal, answering some questions on twitter and holding a Q&A thread on the EVE forum Friday nightt. The player-elected Council … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: What could the sale of CCP Games mean for EVE Online?
