The Jedi system broke Star Wars Galaxies two ways: It treated Star Wars lore like garbage, and it treated player choice like garbage. Once there were Jedi in the game, there was no taking them back out, and when SOE’s NGE added Jedi as a permanent, selectable class, all it did was acknowledge the fact that Jedi were already dueling in front of the Mos Eisley spaceport on the regular anyway. For roleplayers and people who were there for Star Wars as a setting, the addition of playable Jedi actually ruined the Star Wars experience instead of enhanced it as intended. Gamers who were there to build their own character and tell their own stories in that world suddenly felt obligated to wreck beloved characters to rush through a holocron grind to unlock a Jedi slot they didn’t really even want. And the Jedi were added before the NGE, before the CU, even. People like to blame the NGE, but the NGE was just the deathblow, not the core problem. … [Read more...] about Working As Intended: What Star Wars Galaxies got wrong

4. The economy was the core of the game Randall: “The crafting, auction house, and economy were great. With the right skills, you could travel all over the planets, searching for the perfect resource that had the highest quality. You would then build extractors and mark the map, returning every so often to collect the harvest. I love the feeling of accomplishing something even when offline! And the fact that most resources had a wide range of stats meant that the products you crafted would be different from the same item someone else made using ingredients from another planet.” … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: What Star Wars Galaxies life was like before the NGE
As if this wasn’t enough of a PR nightmare, one member of SWG’s team took a vocal stance against the NGE. Community Manager Diane “Tiggs” Migliaccio posted an epic rant against the patch on the forums, saying, “Thinking about all of this it seems to me that in SOE’s rush to get product to market in the first place they dropped the ball bad, and instead of making things better, they constantly seem to make the wrong decisions. Stop f’ing around with focus groups, and fire the marketing suits and hire some good, competent developers and people with vision.” … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: Star Wars Galaxies’ NGE
That’s long-term, though, off in the future with items like guild space stations, new starships, and new Jedi content. In the short-term, the team is working on a new world boss, third anniversary goodies, a major overhaul of the player city system, hardmode instances, and everyone’s favorite, an update to the Ewok Festival of Love aka SWG’s Valentine’s Day event. Did I say favorite? I meant the most horrifying MMO event of all time. … [Read more...] about Travel to Bespin in one Star Wars Galaxies emulator… eventually
Over the next few weeks, I will be jumping into Star Wars Galaxies again here for Hyperspace Beacon, but I want you to tell how to do it in the vein of our Choose My Adventure column. Of course, I would like you to choose the server for me first, and then we will talk about the different classes or profession trees that I can travel up. And being the alt-o-holic that I am, I will likely make more than one character on a server. Fortunately, I am very familiar with SWG itself and should be able to get going in the game pretty easily (although I’m admittedly rusty). … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: Which Star Wars Galaxies emulator should I try first?
