A couple of months ago, I did a Daily Grind asking folks to find something nice to say about MMOs they hate. It was cathartic. I mean, it’s a mental trick that forces you to find the good in things, to look at things from new angles. Not every product or idea deserves that sort of charity, of course, but video games probably should. But the opposite is also useful, so that’s what we’re doing today. In fact, it’s one of my favorite templates to use when I’m trying to be critical about one of my darlings – the “what X got wrong” template. Because the truth is that the people who know and love a thing the most also know its faults better than anyone. (I bet your mom could cut you to the core if she wanted to because of that!) So for example, Star Wars Galaxies is my favorite MMORPG of all time, but I am the first one to admit the combat is just so bad. As BalsBigBrother quipped yesterday, sometimes you play games in spite of their … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: What’s the meanest thing you can say about an MMO you adore?
Summer camp daily schedule template
Like many of you, I remember the rise of MMOs when it was actually happening. I remember when shooters were king too. And I remember when I first heard about this weirdo kiddie game called League of Legends in a magazine made out of paper. Along with you, I watched the rise of the MOBA, felt the pressure to cover the new genre that seemed just a spin-off of MMO arenas. It seemed unimaginable that anyone could ever dethrone the new hotness that was taking esports born in South Korean netcafes and turning them into a western moneymaker. And yet here we are, in 2018, a year after H1Z1, PUBG, and Fortnite shoved the battle royale game template into the spotlight, with League of Legends losing both prominence and apparently revenue. None of these templates stays on top forever. Trends change. Studios turn over. The cycle repeats. What will be the next online game template to take off? And how far off do you think it’ll be? Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: What online game template will be the next to take off?
There’s this particular template for covering MMORPGs on mainstream gaming websites that I cannot stand: the old “haha, MMOs are weird and old, let’s poke at them for our ironic amusement” article. Polygon ran a piece earlier this month that could’ve run the risk of falling into that trope but actually managed to raise good points instead of just taking a snobby dump on the whole genre – probably because the author actually likes MMOs in the first place. Taylor Cooke ponders why he didn’t feel the urge to return to World of Warcraft for Battle for Azeroth, in spite of still enjoying and even craving some content – like raiding – that just can’t compare in more instant-gratification titles like Warframe and Diablo III. In fact, he wonders whether it’s the genre that’s changed too much – or him. Is it that he’s getting old, aging out of MMOs? Or are MMOs simply failing to keep up with the rest of the … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Do you think you’ve aged out of MMOs?
