Last week our City of Heroes group assembled once more, this time for adventures in Nova Praetoria. That’s actually an area/expansion that I hadn’t ever encountered in the MMO to date, as it came out when I was on a break from the game. Unlike the “blueside” content of the Heroes and the “redside” content of the Villains, “goldside” exists in an interesting state of limbo that was a fascinating direction for the game with Going Rogue came out in 2010. Giving players the ability to switch allegiances and explore the more murky grey areas of comic book superheroes provided a much-needed third angle to the title — and one that I don’t see any of the upcoming superhero MMORPGs addressing. Just getting to Nova Praetoria was a bizarre experience of going through The Underground — a network of sewers and subway tunnels that I had never seen before either. Along the way, I bumped into these grotesque cyborgs that raised all … [Read more...] about City of Heroes: Welcome to Nova Praetoria!

Interview: Hands-On With Futuristic Football Title Steel Circus
Steel Circus is gunning for the big boys in gaming. Well, not technically “gunning,” because none of the characters have guns. But there are staves, shields (you can throw), and plenty of fisticuffs in the rough-and-tumble sports game from Iron Mountain Interactive. The premise of Steel Circus is simple. There are three players per side and a ball, and the objective is to toss the ball into your opponent’s net. The team with the most goals at the end of regulation wins. If you’re like me, you’re already thinking, “Oh, so it’s Rocket League.” No, you see, Rocket League has cars. This has people. Not enough? That’s fair, because there are about a hundred games out there going for that “competitive e-sports vibe,” and I asked Game Director Helmut Hutterer about that during our play session this week. “The team aspect,” was his first response. Although there certainly is room for individually skilled players to … [Read more...] about Interview: Hands-On With Futuristic Football Title Steel Circus
Steel Circus Update Introduces Disruptive New Character
Today, developer Iron Mountain Interactive released a new update for its 3v3 team sport game Steel Circus. The update introduces a new playable character to the game, as well as some important quality of life options requested by players. The new Hero, Galena, is a disrupter. She’s not big on damage, and it’s unlikely she’ll knock her opponents out, but she’ll definitely make things interesting as she uses shockwaves to halt other players in their tracks or creates a vortex that sucks them out of position and traps them for a short time. These are the only two abilities that Galena has, so anyone who decides to play her will need to be fairly strategic about it. As for the other changes, players now have access to custom lobbies as well as team voice chat and lobby voice chat options. Each arena also boasts a new playfield and the developers have implemented faster player progression. The new update is available via Steam, as are the patch notes. … [Read more...] about Steel Circus Update Introduces Disruptive New Character
Pokemon Go is So Metal Thanks to the Addition of the Steel Type
Over the last little while, Pokemon Go players have been reporting sightings of "Ditto", a type of Pokemon that transforms into Meltan. Meltan is considered a "Hex Nut Pokemon" of the "Steel" type, a brand new Pokemon species. "Pokemon Go is somehow key to meeting this curious new Pokemon in Pokemon: Let's Go" and research is being conducted all while Meltan is becoming rarer in the mobile collecting game. Most of Meltan’s body is made from liquid metal, and its shape is very fluid. It can use its liquid arms and legs to corrode metal and absorb it into its own body. Meltan generates electricity using the metal it absorbs from outside sources. It uses this electricity as an energy source and also as an attack that can be fired from its eye. Clearly a curious Pokémon, Meltan is very expressive and shows an interest in all kinds of things. Check out the Pokemon: Let's Go / Pokemon Go site to learn more. … [Read more...] about Pokemon Go is So Metal Thanks to the Addition of the Steel Type
