For the longest time in the early 2000s, MMORPGs scared me off. They looked too obtuse, too grindy, too ugly, and too unapproachable for my tastes. It took a special title to really draw me in with its more casual friendly structure and colorful graphics. In early 2004, I found myself entranced with this superhero MMO that let me be whatever type of caped (or non-caped) crusader I wanted to be. From then on, there was no going back with my interest in these types of games. I assume that many MMO gamers owe a great debt to City of Heroes for the way that it introduced, encouraged, and excited them about MMOs. It was a new type of online game, one that boasted an unbelievably flexible character creator and invested in the fantasy of playing as a superhero fighting villains all across Paragon City. Today we’re going to kick off a Game Archaeologist series looking back at City of Heroes. And as with any remarkable superhero, we have to begin with its origin story. Where did it come … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: Digging up the history of City of Heroes
Play TERA for freeThe console boom for TERA looks like it is over. After cruising to an impressive two million players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this spring following the MMO’s console debut in April, TERA has announced that the population has settled down to the point where server merges need to happen on both platforms. En Masse said that it’s taking 22 servers down to seven following the August 21st operation. This will leave the PS4 with two NA and two EU servers and the Xbox One with two NA and one EU shard. The bad news with this is that some names might be lost and characters forced out if there ends up being more than 16 per account per server. The good news here is that with all of the character merges and whatnot, En Masse is giving every account five additional character slots. PC players won’t be unaffected either, as En Masse said that server merges are planned for the computer version later this year. Last night was a pretty chill night for me, in fact I honestly didn’t play that much Warcraft other than getting in and doing the Emissary quest for the day. The sand fishing quest in Vol’dun can officially die in a fire… the only thing that managed to make it reasonable is that I happened to have a couple of other hordies doing it at the same time and we tagged each others spawns. Effectively when you fish with the extra action button… you can either get a work or one of the angry trilobyte things… and it seemed like I pulled way more of those out of the ground rather than the worms I actually needed. Not a fan at all… but it was a 310 azerite chest so figured I NEEDED to do it to see if I got anything interesting from it. I am also trying to adjust to drastically changing up my play style with the warrior. Ultimately I was operating with old data in the back of my head and also trying to play like I had played for most of … [Read more...] about Old Dog New Tricks
