This latest version adds collaborative galleries, allowing you to explore the showrooms of other players and lose yourself in a journey of creativity and personal curation, as well as Russian, Spanish, German, French and Polish localisation. This month marks the eighth anniversary of Daybreak Games’s free-to-play superhero MMO DC Universe Online, and that, of course, means that it’s once again time for the game’s anniversary event, Attack of the Anti-Monitor. This year, the event will feature “open world missions, the Centennial Collapse raid, A World Past Hope and Fear solo, and a ton of new feats, styles, and rewards.” Sounds like a proper party to us. And to commemorate the event, players will be able to get their hands on a slew of stylish new cosmetic items. There’s a “new style-only gear set inspired by Future Joker,” known as the Clown Prince style set, which can be purchased using Qwardian Crowns, and there are two new collections to be discovered in order to earn a title and the totally-safe Antimatter Aura. On top of all that, players can also earn new “apocalyptic” decoration items for their bases. To get in on the festivities, players should hop in the … [Read more...] about DC Universe Online celebrates its eighth anniversary with Attack of the Anti-Monitor event
In returning to the video game preservation debate this week following the DMCA exceptions granted to museums and archivists allowing them to archive online games, I got really angry all over again at the ESA. Earlier this year, the bajillion-dollar video game publishing industry lobby fought tooth and nail to stop preservation efforts, smearing a freakin’ charity museum as degenerate software pirates to thwart their work. And why would they do this? They’re scared, fam. They’re terrified that this is one more step toward allowing consumers access to old online games instead of leaving us no choice but to shell out new ones. And they should be! A lot of old MMOs were awesome, and a lot of the new ones that have replaced them are not. As I put it in Overthinking, “If you’re genuinely afraid that the emulation of a 20-year-old MMORPG will cause people to stop playing your new games, maybe you should stop churning out regressive, abusively monetized … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Which MMORPGs should be preserved in the Video Game Museum?
In last week’s edition of One Shots, I issued perhaps my most peculiar challenge yet. I asked readers (for once) not to submit any of their own screenshots but rather their favorite pieces of MMORPG concept art. This proved to be quite the siren’s call, and the column was deluged in gorgeous pieces. I know I had a hard time picking out just five of my faves! We’ll start with this amazing piece done to honor a late, great superhero MMO. “Does post-concept art by the lead artist count?” asked Hikari. “Spirit of Paragon was made after the announced closure of City of Heroes. This is such an evocative image of the spirit to move forward and onward despite the loss of the past.” Amen to that! “I don’t know if it’s the limitations of the HeroEngine, or just Bioware choosing the style, but I have to wonder if only Star Wars: The Old Republic more closely matched some of its fantastic concept art,” wrote Rees Racer. … [Read more...] about One Shots: Concept art showcase
Welcome back to another look at all the MMO beta happenings of the week! I’ve stashed Eliot in the brig so that I can take over Betawatch and do some extra work on Friday! Wait, I’m not really sure I’m doing griefing right. Anyway, here’s what’s up. Defiance 2050 is hunting for beta testers! Make sure you’re all signed up. TERA formally launched on consoles, bringing an end to its beta. Soulworker likewise moved from soft launch to full launch. Made of money? A big chunk of cash will get you into Pantheon’s pre-alpha next month. We got our hands on Conan Exiles’ launch build (and loved it). Ashes of Creation is targeting fourth quarter 2018 for its alpha one launch. Camelot Unchained is testing, testing, testing. Crowfall is now in 5.5 pre-alpha, having introduced a new map and lady centaurs. Arcfall may still be in pre-alpha, but now it’s also free-to-play. Star Citizen rolled out 3.1 and then 3.1.1, but then rolled … [Read more...] about Betawatch: Defiance’s beta, TERA’s console launch, and Eliot’s in the brig (April 6, 2018)
