One of the most interesting things about EVE Online is the fact that its single shard server forces players from different countries and cultures to co-exist in the same space. In a virtual universe in which the distances and barriers between real world nations should be meaningless, players still tend to split off into geographical and cultural analogues of their home nations. Some of that is due to timezone differences, of course, but the biggest drivers of division always seem to be language-based or cultural in nature. EVE has seen plenty of real-world national identities mirrored in-game, from big American coalitions throwing their military might around and European corps working together when it suits them to Russian groups stubbornly defending their homelands from invasion no matter the cost. The Russian community in particular has always seemed pretty impenetrable to outsiders, having developed its own distinct identity over the years with its own internal culture and even … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: What really sets Russian EVE players apart?

Welp, we did not see this coming, but here’s some extremely good news in the Black Desert license transfer saga. Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been covering the planned hand-over of the game’s Russian version from publisher GameNet to Korean owner Pearl Abyss. Initially, both companies vowed to work together to transfer account data and keep the servers going at their new destination, but then Pearl Abyss admitted it had failed to acquire their game data and localization from GameNet, meaning the loss of Russian player accounts and necessitating a do-over for the entirety of Russian localization. Pearl Abyss then followed that up with a mountain of salt for GameNet parent company Vebanaul, whom it accused of denying PA access to updates since this summer, of neglecting to set up data transfer consent system to meet Russian law, and of attempting fleece PA with an “excessively high price” for the database. … [Read more...] about Black Desert’s Russian servers will be spared from their abrupt and messy closure after all
I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that everyone has at some point seen the xkcd called Isolation, but if not, there it is. No matter what the age and era, someone’s always preaching that people were more sociable in the long long ago. In this comic, however, Randall Munroe isn’t even contesting that. His point is basically no duh and so what. Yes, we become less sociable with random people in our immediate vicinity as we gain more and more access to ideas, entertainment, and people not in our immediate vicinity thanks to technology. Ultimately, replacing impromptu stranger interaction with the amusements of our choice appears to be what a lot of people wanted all along. MMORPG players surely see where I’m going with this because we have the same eternal struggle when it comes to in-game socializing, grouping, community, and stickiness, the tug-of-war between the people who want to play alone together and the people who think that … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Alone together vs. forced grouping in MMORPGs
This is the third post in the blog post series “Guild Wars 2 vs. Rift vs. Trove”. The title may suggest that at the end of this series, I will tell you which games is the best of the best, … But I will not do that! While the purpose of this series is to compare those games to a certain degree, my goal is to give you a thorough overview to help you figure out which game is the best for what you want from a game. Or maybe just to figure out whether those three games are interesting for you at all, independently of each other. If you missed the previous postings, you can find them here:Part 1: Basic informationPart 2: Lore In this part, we will look at the character creation. I previously already covered it in the “Basic information” post, but I felt it deserves more space than that. I know that some people just hit “randomize” and they are done. If you are one of those, you may want to skip this part. ;) Others, like me, can easily spend hours in … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2 vs. Rift vs. Trove: Part 3 (Character Creation)
