In Plain English: The Curious Case Of Jagex V John Doe

Those of you who play RuneScape or World of Warcraft are likely well acquainted with a popular phishing technique that made its rounds over the past few years, or at least you would be if you took a gander through your spam filter. The email warns players that they’ve been caught either botting or engaging in real money trading, and that further cheating will add them to a list of John Does in a pending lawsuit. While the email links to a fake login page designed to steal your account information, you might be surprised to know that the body of the email itself is indeed legitimate, or I should say was originally written by a legitimate source. Jagex once filed lawsuit against cheaters, and it didn’t end in their favor. No, seriously. I reported on this way back when it initially happened, getting confirmation from Jagex and from the central district court of California where the lawsuit was filed. The email cites both a valid case file and … [Read more...] about In Plain English: The Curious Case Of Jagex V John Doe

Google AdSense Ad Serving has been Disabled to Your Site

Whenever we talk about blog monetization methods, AdSense is discussed as one of the favorite methods because it offers us recurring income and it is currently one of the highest paying ad networks. These days Google AdSense strongly considers the quality of pages where ads are displayed, and they take this very seriously. An email which no blogger or webmaster wants to receive from Google AdSense is one with the following subject line: “Google AdSense Ad Serving has been Disabled to Your Site“. A few days ago I joined the club of unfortunate recipients of this email. Following is the email which I received from the AdSense team in its entirety: Hello, During a recent review of your account we found that you are currentlydisplaying Google ads in a manner that is not compliant with our programpolicies(https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=48182&stc=aspe-1pp-en). … [Read more...] about Google AdSense Ad Serving has been Disabled to Your Site

Astellia Online North American Closed Beta First Impressions

Astellia is a beautiful upcoming MMORPG scheduled to release in the West this year. It was formally released in 2016 in China and is finally making its way here, something many of us have been looking forward to. We at MMOByte have played through the previous Korean version of the game, but had no clue what was being said at any point in time during the game, so we ourselves were looking forward to this!  The team behind Astellia were kind enough to send us 2 closed beta keys to try out the game first-hand. Being the incredibly generous people we are we went ahead and requested some keys for our viewers. We were fortunate enough to be able to share 100 of those keys with you guys. We actually saw a lot of you winners in game and really enjoyed saying hi to you all. We’ll also be giving away more keys come closed beta 2, so stay tuned to our website and Twitter’s for future events. Although if you’re super anxious to get in, you can purchase their Legendary … [Read more...] about Astellia Online North American Closed Beta First Impressions

6 things Star Trek Online does poorly

Now that I’m back in Star Trek Online and spending a lot of time going back through the storylines and building up a new ship, I’m convinced all over again that this MMORPG has really become a gem in the industry. I know it gets some flak for its lockboxes and cash shop, but honestly it doesn’t bother me that much or seem that prohibitive. There are so many great aspects of the game, yet I cannot help but see six areas that definitely need improvement. Let’s gripe! 1. Cutscene glitches and lip syncing Star Trek Online gets a lot of points in my book for going to great lengths to secure the actual actors from the show and for doing a whole lot of voice acting (in fact, I would say that STO has the most voice acting by the original cast of any IP-related MMO ever made, unless I’m forgetting a glaring oversight). Yet it often squanders that with abysmal lip syncing and visual glitches during cutscenes. The mission briefing screens are fine, but any time the … [Read more...] about 6 things Star Trek Online does poorly

Here’s how Discord says it’s been addressing toxicity and spam

It’s nearly impossible to be a gamer in 2019 and not be at least familiar with Discord, the ubiquitous chat program that’s replaced, in turns, voice chat, text chat, even guild chat, and for some folks, Steam. That also means it’s a prime destination for the worst kinds of humans. And you might be wondering what exactly a company with 250M users does to address that. This is what Discord’s latest transparency blog post is all about. The company says it received over 50,000 reports in just the first three months of 2019, as users dispatched complaints on everything from harassment, threats, and doxxing to self-harm and hacking and spam. “In the investigation phase, the Trust and Safety team acts as detectives, looking through the available evidence and gathering as much information as possible,” Discord says. “This investigation is centered around the reported messages, but can expand if the evidence shows that there’s a bigger violation … [Read more...] about Here’s how Discord says it’s been addressing toxicity and spam
