How a Video Exposes the Sorry State of World of Warcraft

Almost 6 years ago in 2010, I penned an article entitled the Are Chatless MMOs a Precursor to Console MMOs? It was during that fateful year that Blizzard designed to automate the process of assembling groups for dungeons in their World of Warcraft MMO with a feature called the Dungeon Finder. WoW would never be the same. Back then that I predicted the bleak, anti-social future of MMOs that had decided to embrace the seductive path of convenience based game design. That future is finally here with WoW and it is not good. The closure of the Nostalrius legacy server has made world-wide news and touched a nerve. The very existence of legacy servers is a public repudiation of Blizzard’s stewardship of WoW. Many faithful fans are finally asking serious existential questions about the current state of WoW. The fact that hundreds of thousands of people are voting with their feet and rejecting the current version of WoW and instead are playing on legacy servers speaks volumes about the … [Read more...] about How a Video Exposes the Sorry State of World of Warcraft

5 Biggest MMO Disappointments

This is one of those days I have zero clue what to write about… but as not to break the chain of constant posts I am going to push through and post something anyways.  In part this post about nothing has been brought to you today by the letters N, D and A.  So instead of a normal post about what I did last night, or what I want to do today…  I am going to make a post about my top five biggest MMO disappointments.  This is kind of the bookend to my post about my five favorite MMOs, so hopefully I can do this without coming off overly negative about each. The Disclaimer Some of my picks for this list will be rather controversial… but they are my picks nonetheless.  This list is not about what I consider to be the worst MMOs, or even bad MMOs at all.  In fact most of the ones included on this list are games I have played over and over again… and will likely play again in the future.  On the converse… these are the games I … [Read more...] about 5 Biggest MMO Disappointments

The Secret World Impressions

[update]  The beta weekend continues Friday 5/18. At this point I have spent about 6 hours in total running around in Funcom’s latest MMO, The Secret World.  Up to this point I hadn’t really fully decided if I liked the game or not.  From what I am seeing floating around, seems like most people are having similar mixed emotions.  The game is an odd mixture of really good elements, and horrifically bad elements.  Up to now I wasn’t quite sure if the good were good enough to make me ignore the bad. The Ugly and Awkward The Secret World focuses heavily on the story of this dark setting.  The problem is, the cut scenes and voice acting that make up the otherwise well written story are tragically bad.  The motion of the characters are rigid and mannequin-like as then bend in impossibly puppet like directions.  The voice acting varies greatly between extremely well done, to tragically confused accents. The saddest part about this is … [Read more...] about The Secret World Impressions

Star Trek’s Holodeck, Virtual Worlds and the Future That Never Was

When they write the history of virtual worlds and interactive entertainment, the introduction of the Star Trek’s holodeck that captured the imagination of millions of sci-fi fans will surely be included. Back in 1987, a new Star Trek TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted which introduced sci-fi fans to the wonders of the holodeck. Created in the fictional future of planet earth, the holodeck was used primarily by the United Federation of Planets as a recreational activity for crew members of their starships. The holodeck was a virtual reality room where computers would accurately simulate people, creatures, objects, climates and places all within a designated world. Unlike the virtual reality of today that is visual and audio in nature, the virtual reality in the holodeck allowed participants to use all of their senses to experience the fullness of the simulation. The holodeck was a useful plot contrivance that breathed some fresh air into the Star Trek … [Read more...] about Star Trek’s Holodeck, Virtual Worlds and the Future That Never Was

SMITE God Review – King Arthur, Once and Future King

With King Arthur, we have our first “mortal man” in the Battleground of the Gods. Guan Yu doesn’t really count, since he’s revered as a God, and considered a mark of good fortune to have Guan Yu in your place of business. He’s definitely something unique in the world of SMITE, and is the first member of the Arthurian Pantheon, with Merlin waiting in the wings. He is the Wielder of Excalibur, and he can do so many things with his absolutely bonkers moveset. There is something I’m going to go into a little more detail below, but there is one thing I absolutely, positively loathe about King Arthur – Why is he forced into Smart Cast? I don’t play with it, and I waste so many ability casts because I’m so used to being able to line up a shot before I drop it. Sure, I’m ultra casual, being Gold (at best) in Ranked Conquest. But I’m positive that I can’t be the only one who feels this way. King Arthur is an interesting … [Read more...] about SMITE God Review – King Arthur, Once and Future King
