I had wanted to write this post as part of the Newbie Blogger Initiative, but due to real life, I couldn’t. I figured now that it’s NaBloPoMo and I need every topic I can find to fill this blog with relatively reasonable blog posts, I can still write about this “issue”. ;) When I started blogging, I had several reasons for doing so. For one, I like gaming and I wanted to talk about it with people who share my hobby – other than bookahnerk, of course. But I did not want to limit my correspondence to German-speaking people. I don’t mind them, of course. I am one of them, after all. ;) But I speak and write German every day, so it wouldn’t be anything special, let alone a challenge. I also felt that with all the studying I had done for my university degree (I studied psychology), my English reading comprehension was really good, but my production of the English language had gotten rather bad. Reading scientific papers, textbooks, etc. that were … [Read more...] about Blogging in a foreign language

Learn more about (and possibly join) Blaugust Reborn! With the official start of this year’s Blaugust blogger event next week, us participating sites have been asked — demanded at gunpoint, really — to chew on the theme of “preparation” for new bloggers. As I’m sure that many of my contemporaries will be covering blog setup and the like, I’m going to take a different tack and discuss my approach to post preparation. Probably the most difficult and challenging aspect of blogging is keeping the posts coming. It’s a constant, ongoing event, unless you don’t care about building up an audience and want a once-in-a-blue-moon post frequency. Everyone gets excited about writing at first, but consistently churning out posts requires discipline, effort, routine, and — pertinent to this article — strategy. There’s nothing wrong with coming up with a good posting strategy and preparing for your upcoming days. While you can … [Read more...] about Blaugust 2018: The prepper’s guide to survival blogging
Update: This giveaway is closed. We will announce the winners here in our blog soon! Today is the big day! Our blog is celebrating its 4th anniversary. 4 years of writing mostly about Guild Wars 2, and more recently, Rift and Trove as well. 4 years of writing about first impressions of various other games, writing about community, events and so on! We have also recently started publishing a few of our posts in two languages: English and German. As has become tradition, we’re celebrating our anniversary with a giveaway. This year, however, it’s a bit different as TrionWorlds as well as ArenaNet support us. A big thank you to their community managers for their help! Here are the prizes. Guild Wars 2 5 mini llamas One in-game package of yet to be determined items (I can already tell that the package will be worth at least 250 gold – unless the prices for those items plummage within the next few days :p) 3 grey GW2 t-shirts (2 x size L and 1 x size XL) Germany only … [Read more...] about 4th Blog Anniversary: Let’s celebrate with giveaways!
Trove launched last Thursday and a lot of people are curious whether this game is any good. I will try to give you an impression of the game, but will try to keep it short(ish). There is a quite simple reason for this: This is the 4th time that I’m writing down my impressions of Trove. The first time was in July 2014, when Trove was still in alpha. The second time was during closed beta in October 2014. The third time was during open beta in February 2015. You may also notice quite a lot of similarities between this post here and the one from February. I had tried to write a new impression piece, but found that so many things from the post in February still hold true that I decided to rework this blog post and bring it up-to-date instead of writing everything again. An additional note: An online game’s launch is usually accompanied by queue times etc. when a lot of people want to play the game at the same time. I will not write about this here, though, as I’m certain … [Read more...] about Post-launch Impressions: Is Trove a good game?
One of the things I have failed miserably at lately is keeping up with my blog feed. During the heyday of Google Reader I was a voracious consumer of gaming blogs of all stripe, and regularly read through everything in my backlog of posts. Stuff happened and my attempt to expand my horizons when I was writing a column on the blogosphere saw my feed ballooning to some 700 sites… a good number of them posting about things that never really interested me on a personal level. As a result I find myself spending less time reading blog posts and tend to catch up in a flurry of reading on the weekends. That said I did end up doing a strafing run on Feedly yesterday afternoon and stumbled across a post from Tobold posing the question of whether or not the MMO Blogosphere is still alive. The short answer is yes, the community is still very much alive. The long answer however is a lot more complicated. While there are still a ton of … [Read more...] about MMO Blogging Dead?
